HI,
Any Advice very welcome. We will be going on our first trip to France in our van on sunday, and i was considering buying a laptop to take with us.We are not really computer minded and wondered if some of the more knowledgeable of you could.
1...recommend a laptop to buy.
2..Explain in simple terms how to use it abroad.

Hi Pejoy.
Just buy the cheapest and simplest laptop with Wi-Fi and visit McDonalds now and again.

Ray.

yes, get a cheapo, get it set up at home, then you can get signed on easily at hot-spots. I took my laptop on a recent cruise to norway, and you could spot where the free wi-fi places were. In Stavanger there was a spot at & around Burger King - there were loead of staff from the 2 cruise ships in town, plus passengers Laughing all getting up tp date on their computers Cool . Just make sure you don't do any "secure" things like bank transactions at wi-fi spots.

bt we're off on Sunday as well - 10:00 seafrance amd heading south, not sure where Wink

Well excuse me if I am wrong, but you seem to have little knowledge of computers - as such I would endorse the above posters suggestion. Buy the cheapest, even this will more than capable if you have limited experience.

In a year or two when have become quite the whizz on a computer then go treat yourself to a sparkly one. If you buy expensive now by the time you are really ready to push its limits it will be incredibly out of date.

Theres a tonne of laptops in the £300-350 range that would suit you fine for basic web surfing, email, viewing digital pics etc

Good luck in your search

Terry

If the only reason you are buying it is for internet use, then a "netbook" will be cheapest and do what you need. Try and get one that has WiFi wireless-N as this will allow you to connect to McDonalds etc without having to go inside a buy a burger Laughing
Don't be suckered into buying a contract with a netbook. They are always bad value even when the machine is "free".
If you want to use it for other things, especially playing DVDs or photo work, then that is a different story... Cool

All good advice. Just make sure with a netbook the display resolution is adequate for your needs.

"Dongles" are fine for low useage (text emails and general web surfing)
But get very expensive for high bandwith useage especially abroad.

THREE (3) have a deal atm which is quite good - BUT all of the dongle packages get very expensive when used abroad - I use one a couple of times a year whilst away on foreign holidays. You will pay a daily connection charge and a per MB charge too (assuming you can get a signal that is)

If you connect via WiFi then that is basically free as you are using the person you connect to (McDonalds etc) bandwith

I would definately not go the dongle route

(edit - oh and dongles come on contract - mine costs me £15 per month wether I use it or not)

Hi
Has anyone any experience of using a broadband dongle in Portugal?
We are prepared to buy one there as we will be staying for three months but don’t know who or where to buy from.
We have a BT dongle and, in theory, can connect to FON outlet but I don’t think that will be all that successful.
Last year we found lots of free WIFI but as we do online banking we would prefer a more secure and convenient connection.
I have searched the site for broadband in Portugal but with no success.
Thanks
Gary
Very Happy
