Just been reading what can be taken on a plane as hand luggage.

"Laptops and other large electrical items must be placed on a tray to be x-rayed."

I always thought that X rays could damage storage media.

Or was that fogging the film in old film cameras?

Hi SWIO,

Airport hand-luggage x-ray machines will not effect your laptop or flash drives. My Laptop and memory sticks are pasted through 12 or more scans a month and all have shown no ill effects.

The reason you must remove large electrical items (inc Laptops) and have then scanned separately is that they contain very dense components, especially the large batteries. These absorb the xray energy and could mask something more sinister hidden within or alongside.

Film can cause other problems but see below for good advice:-
http://www.kodak.com/global/en/service/tib/tib5201.shtml

I advise you read the following regarding hand (carry-on) baggage, especially the rules regarding "Liquids":-

Hope that helps and all the best,
777.

Hi

It's magnetic fields that could corrupt data on traditional disk based storage media, essentially they store the digital information as streams of very, very small magnetic pulses/fields. obviously placing a magnet next to the storage device could corrupt all those little N-S and S-N pulses.
