Hi

We've just bought a '97 VW Multivan. It's got a VR6 and an auto box

The problem is it does about 3000 rpm at 70mph. This is a little uncomfortable as well as expensive!

I wonder if anyone had any ideas what we could do to change this?

We're thinking of another gearbox or diff from another VW but we don't know much about what's available across the board.

Thanks for any help
James

Hi James, If you have no response on this forum you may have more luck on the "The Brick-yard"
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/
a forum all about VW Transporters, Caravelles and Multivans. I believe your 1997 Multivan may be a T4.

But don't all those come as a package? Confused

Petrol + Auto = High RPM + Expensive.

Hi James and welcome to the club.

Without wishing to sound like a smart-arse, the best way to lower the revs is to lower the speed!! Rolling Eyes Wink

At 70mph most vans will be expensive to run, and who wants to race along when you are on holiday anyway! Confused Very Happy

As an example, we were early on the way to the Warren Farm rally last week, so I slowed down to between 50 and 55mph for most of the 100 miles. I got 44mpg on the instrument readout. (Which I think is pretty accurate)

At 70mph, which I very rarely do, I would be lucky to get more than 25mpg.

The difference really is that dramatic when you are pushing a slab fronted vehicle through the air.

Hope this helps

As a cheaper alternative it might be worth investigating if you could fit wider and therefore taller tyres to your existing rims? They would need to be the same aspect ratio as the existing ones though to make them taller.

James,

Have you calculated from the gear ratio in top/4th what your revs should be at 70 mph? I mention this because at that age the VW auto box may be suffering a certain amount of torque converter slippage so the revs could be slightly higher than they ought to be.
