As for the wi fi connection, you need to set this up and search for your connection, do you have any security on it if so this needs to be included in the security settings of the computer, it been along time since I had one of those, I hope someone can help you.
hey thank you so much won't look quite such an idiot now - will be able to carry laptop around and tell people what its called - but still won't be able to use the bl***** thing!
have got norton internet security as had it with desktop and is a 3 user licence
have tried searching for connection but after that my vast IT knowledge dries up like a prune in the sun...
when i go thru sony's help info it says ensure wireless button is switched on (done) and light is on errr doh thats the bit that isnt working that i cannot get to work and was hoping the help page would solve! it just doesnt say how to get it to switch on! mmmm
did i mention i only like computers when they work and do as theyre told otherwise they fly!!
not sure if this will work, I haven't got a VAIO, but there is apparently a program on the start button called Smart WI Connection Utility - select WLAN with that and see if this brings up the green light
good luck

This might be tricky, if you're still up, since I ain't not got Vista on anything, and I'm on a Mac at the moment.
But ...
Somewhere off the start button is the "Control panel", and somewhere on the control panel icons is "Networks" or something like that. Open that up, and you might be able to see the wireless network connection, which may (if we're very, very lucky) say "Disabled". Right click, select enable, and see what happens.
My experience with Vista is limited, so I can't be 100% sure the things I'm quoting are accurate, but you should be able to find what I'm talking about. If not, then someone with a Vista PC in front of them might be able to help you out.
One more thought - some wireless modems / routers have an option to stop "broadcasting" your SSID (effectively, the name of your wireless network), in which case, you will have to set it up manually because your laptop won't be able to 'see' it. Unlikely that this is the case, but a long shot in case nothing else works.
