Has anyone else suffered he problem of the bottom part of their dipstick breaking off inside the dipstick tube on a Renault Master?

Happened to me in Belgium earlier this year. Just checking the oil level prior to heading for the ferry home. Withdrew the dipstick - and the bottom end where you actually measure the oil level broke off inside the dipstick tube. Travelled home -with fingers crossed. Spoke to the local Renualt trucks workshop manager. Yep - known fault. After a year or two the plastic hardens under the heat of the oil. The dipstick tube has a double curve and the reversal of bending as the dipstick is withdrawn is sufficient to cause the dipstick to snap. As I was just within warranty I tried Renault Cars. No chance. They wanted to remove the sump and fish out the bits. The trucks man said ignore it. The mesh on the oil pump will stop any bits getting in, and even microscopic bits will be trapped in the filter. When the oil was changed at a scheduled service, a few small bits on the dipstick were flushed out. I've since done 4000 miles without incident.

So, be warned. Apparently Renault don't do a flexible metal version of the oil dipstick, so the answer may be to renew the dipstick at each service; either that or don't check the oil level very often.

Richard.

Or remove the dipstick and keep it somewhere convenient. Plug the top of the dipstick tube with something suitable. Just remove the plug and 'dip' the stick when you need to.

The dipstick on my old 'proper' Renault Master is about a metre long and is a lovely bendy coily metally thing except for the end bit. Seventeen years old and good as new. They just don't make 'em ........ etc. Very Happy

Thanks Harvey,

I'm embarrassed didn't think of such a simple solution. Thanks again.
