My original laptop is now beyond all rescue and repair.
I have photos and other things stored on the hard drive. Can I remove the hard drive and use it in some sort of external HD enclosure to access the information stored on it?
If this is possible will this erase any other sensitive information on the laptop so that it can be safely disposed of.

You Can remove your HDD and there are external devices that you can fit your HDD into, Depending on what is actually damaged on your laptop you may be able to retrieve your photos etc, BUT it may well be your actual HDD that is the problem so it all depends.
It may be best to take it to a IT specialist to do the job.

You need something like: >> this <<, but you need to know what interface your HDD is - whether it's IDE, EIDE or SATA.
You should then be able to plug your disk into another computer.

Thats exactly what I need. Just found out where the HD is and removed it.
Its a Hitachi Travelstar, SATA.
Is the old laptop now effectively safe to ditch, i.e. all my information is contained in the HD.

Its the actual body and hinge of the laptop thats cream crackered so we even have trouble switching it on due to the hinge switches not contacting properly.
