For several years I have used Tomtom Navigator software on a PDA (Mitac 168) and I have been very pleased with the results. The maps (Navigator 6 April 2007) are getting out of date but I find that Tomtom have no plans to update Navigator 6 with a new release suitable for PDAs, only certain mobile phones. I now feel abandoned by Tomtom and I am not keen to buy a specific Tomtom device as my PDA is a perfectly good Sat Nav receiver.
Anyone else in this situation?
Any good suggestions?

Hi Bob,

I am running Co-Pilot 8 on an XDA and it's quite good. http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/

This latest release of Co-Pilot is reasonably inexpensive for European maps (inc UK & Ireland). Currently £59.99 download.

I have unlimited UK web on my XDA phone and am able to use a feature called Co-Pilot Live which lets chosen friends monitor your travel while you are in transit. Co-Pilot do not charge for this but you may have to pay your mobile phone company.

It runs on Windows Mobile and iPhone. I believe an O2 iPhone comes with unlimited UK web included and the screen size would be ideal for a GPS application.

Have a look here http://www.alk.eu.com/buynow/copilot/

I'm not sure if your PDA is compatible, they say some Mio models should be ok. Check the list here http://www.alk.eu.com/copilot/compatibility.asp

Hi Sceptic,
Thank you for your detailed reply. The price certainly seems attractive but unfortunately my PDA does not appear on the compatability list.

Hi Sceptic, I have just found a second compatability list (version 7) and my PDA is on the list. I will have a look at the website.
Does anyone else use Co- Pilot?

I've used Tom Tom on my PDA for over 5 years, with the Western Europe maps which I updated about 2005.

Unfortunately my PDA is a HP 2210 which seems to have dropped from favour everywhere. There appears no support from Tom Tom, nor from HP. The HP site appears to send you round in circles if any query in not on their Frequently Asked questions.

Unless anyone hear knows how to update my PDA then it appears I'll have to buy a new GPS system.

I did borrow a Binatone GPS in September, but it kept trying to give wrong directions, for example the best way from Birmingham to Exeter and Plymouth was to get off the M5. I hope this was a faulty unit and not typical of the Binatone system.

Hi

I have used CoPilot Europe for the last 6-7 years, 40k miles+ per year, found it far quicker and reliable than TT, have tested both together several times, they do have Ver8 for iphones, android and other smartphones also, Use the live feature for messaging when travelling.
Personally prefer it to TT, others will have different opinions who find TT is all they need.

Tom Tom support is not great when you need it, CoPilot is OK but could be better, again personal experience

Have a look on pocketgpsworld.com, they review all the software etc

Hi,
I've had a Medion PPC150 (Mio 168 clone) with inbuilt GPS receiver for a few years and after ditching the Navigon sat nav software I have been using Map Factor Pocket Navigator from Directions.

Directions Ltd

I recently upgraded it to Navigator 9 Europe and it mostly works well and is reasonably fast although it has a few quirks - as they all seem to Sad

The latest version costs about £70 or £45 for the upgrade.

It comes with some PC software called Map Explorer that lets you check routes on your pc and import your own POI files in CSV format.

Steve

Hi Steve,
It is really helpful to hear from someone using the same type of PDA. I have looked at the spec on the website and it all seems similar to Tom tom but I have a few questions. Are the maps in Navigator 9 up to date or have you found annoying innacuracies? Is there a desktop programme to allow updating or importing POIs? Does the software re route as soon as you deviate from the route? Can you change the screen colours for the maps, they look a bit odd to me on the website? You mention "quirks", are they serious ones?
Thanks for your assistance.

Hi,
I'll try to answer your queries about Pocket Navigator 9 Smile

The maps have been reasonably up to date. They use TeleAtlas and the latest version has many new features including motorway signs, lane assistance. Due to the small screen the panels can seem a bit cramped.

We found it useful and accurate in France and Switzerland this year and Czech republic and Hungary last year. (It's produced by a MapFactor a Czech company Smile ) It goes across country boundaries and you can choose which countries to install on the SD card in the pda

Sometimes I haven't found much difference in the routes when selecting shortest or fastest. From my home for any long distance trips it plots the quickest route south to the M1 even if we are heading north.

I've found it best for locating campsites etc over the last ten miles or so.

The English female voice instructions can't be changed and are a bit abrupt but it recalculates the route quickly - as she keeps telling me Sad

The Map Explorer application that comes with it is used for generating POI files which I then copy onto the SD card. I usually find POI files in Garmin CSV format on various websites and open them in Excel then sometimes shuffle the data around before importing the data. It's a bit clunky perhaps compared with TomTom.

The map colours have day and night mode but I haven't tried changing from the defaults.

You can enter Lat and Long directly and plan a route with several waypoints before setting off.

Hope that helps

Steve

Hi Steve,
Thank you for taking the time to provide a detailed reply.
I have just been offered by Tomtom an update to my maps for £40 which would provide a short term fix. I don't expect any further updates from Tomtom as Navigator 7 will not support PDAs.
I think I will sleep on this one before making a move.

Thanks a million for your help.
