Hi everybody
Still looking for my "perfect" motorhome. I have seen photo's of what appears to be an immaculate 1994 Dethleffs Globetrotter. I like sightseeing in the hilly parts of France etc (off the main roads). It would seem that everyones opinion is that the 1.9td engine is to small for comfort. I am not a speed merchant but I do'nt like holding lorries up (they have a living to earn). I would welcome your opinions. Thanks for your time. tuk-tuk.
Hi tuk-tuk and a warm welcome to MotorhomeFacts from me. I hope you enjoy your stay with us.
Our last motorhome was an AutoSleeper Pollensa on a 2001 Peugeot chassis with the 1.9L td.
Having moved up from a 1991 2.5L non-turbo Ford, I found the 1.9 brilliant. It accelerated UPHILL. Like you, I don't race. But that MH, maximum weight 3.2t, went everywhere I wanted it to.
It went over the Honister Pass in the Lakes, naughty, I know!
It went to the Mediterranean twice. It went along the Gorge du Tarn.
It did Scotland several times, including Elgol on Skye. Elgol has a 20% climb out of the little harbour. No problem!
It used to roll comfortably at 70mph, returning around 25mpg on average. To be honest, we changed MHs because the bed needed making every night and there wasn't that much storage and AuntieSandra found some money! Otherwise, we'd still be using our 1.9L.
May I suggest that you don't get paranoid about the engine size - yes, size matters - but focus on the perfect layout. You will be passing lorries, not holding them up! I came back from Scotland on 1st January 2007, 495 miles in 8.5 hours, average speed just over 58mph! It went well.
Good luck with your hunting.

Hello tuk-tuk,
Like UncleNorm we had a autosleeper Pescara 1.9td and were very pleased with the perfomance but we did find it lacked a little pulling power so we decided to have it looked at and took it to Vvanaken (who are no longer in business)to have the diesel pump tuned and boy did that make a big difference to the pulling power,so there are ways to make that little improvement.
Hope this helps you make your chose
Nigel

I feel a little more confident now. It's about 80 miles away so I will go to view it and demand a test drive (up a hill preferably). I live in Spain so it will be quite comfortable Mh'ing all the year round. U/K etc in summer (to cool down).
Once again, thanks for your interest, nice people on here. Ed
just as devils advocate i have the 1.9td in a 1997 ci pegaso it is the main reason i would look to change my baby, if i keep the weight right down ie a weekend away it is reasonably responsive , just a tankfull of water and bikes on the back can make a massive difference, i find that if i am on a motorway and hit some of the big hills the power just die's ,
i have been through france italy spain and germany in her and she will get you there but when we used the millau viaduct you come of and really start to climb at times i was in second gear and seating , having said that almost every veh in the services at the top of the hill had thier bonnets up cooling down ,
like most on here i take life slower in the m/h but when i have to travel ie to catch a ferry i find fuel will go from a normal 23 mpg at a steady 55, to 17 mpg at 70 mph.
my mate has the 2.5 in a 96 autotrail and he cruises up hills i have to take a run at
I used to have an Autosleeper Pollensa 2001 1.9td and thought the van was great except for the Peugeot bit it just hadn't got the necessary umph. Not hills or even mountains just inclines would cause rapid deceleration. We like mountains, the Alps in particular and ascending was slightly embarrasing.
Perhaps its being an ex company car driver and motorcyclist the combination just failed to suit my driving style I generally maintain the legal limits with an occasion adrenolin burst.
