Hi,

Firstly, I am under no illusion of thinking that this photograph is in anyway of a quality, worthy of winning a competition (it was after all taken by Suzy, lol)

It is however, probably my favourite image from nearly 2000 photographs taken on our first European tour in the Motorhome. It is not particularly the image that I like, more the memories that it conjures up.

The image was taken in St Cyprien, Dordogne early on in our journey.
There are quite a number reasons why I like the image so much, some of which I am quite ashamed.

Initially our "Tour Plan" was to get into Spain, as quickly as possible. France in my opinion, was nothing more than an "hurdle en route". I had certain "pre-conceptions" of what I "thought" French people to be like.

In the photograph, me and my 8 year old Daughter were playing Boules (Petanque?) on the Aire at St Cyprien, with our shiny new Boules. The couple in the photograph were from another Motorhome on the Aire. They are both French. Upon seeing me & my Daughter playing Boules they came over and asked to join in. They took time to show us the rules (the cheek of it I thought, after all, I was the Laguna Park Hotel, Tenerife champion for 2 weeks running back in 2004).

Anyway, we played for a good hour or so. Many remarks of France v England, World Cup etc were said, and we had a really good laugh.

A few minutes after retiring to the van, there was a knock on the door. It was the French Gentleman and his Wife, bearing gifts in the form of little bottles of beer. We spent another hour or so chatting about anything and everything and drinking the very nice couples beer (btw I very much like a drink).

I look at the photo and I realise a number of things, primarily that I was VERY wrong with my pre-conceptions of the French. But also:

1) Using shiny new Boules in France, against what was possibly the French National Boules Team Captain, will result in MUCH ridicule.

2) Don't believe Suzy when she tells me to "buy that shirt, it suits you".

3) Drinking 1 litre bottles of beer in public looks very un cool.

4) I am not as good at Boules as I thought I was.

5) My 8 year old daughter is a VERY VERY VERY bad loser (of which the blame was placed squarely at my feet).

6) I can now pronounce, Périgueux. Like a native Frenchman.

7) Just how good France is for anyone with a Motorhome.

and
Cool Little bottles of beer with "Sans Alcohol" written on them, don't get you drunk.

Our next European Tour (Summer 2010) - Will be purely in France.

Kind off m/h related.

M/H broke down so we went to Cypress whilst it was repaired.

This was taken at 13:52 and when the storm struck it lasted for 4 days.

Should have stayed in the broken down van.

Do not expect to win, but just a warning not to go on holiday with us!!!
The bloke in the picture was lucky to escape as the wave to his right nearly swept him in the sea.

Well no motor home in the picture but I did take it whilst on a weekend away in the van. It was mid morning and the sun was trying to break through the fog.
