We have decided not to go down the route of SLR we are people who take photos whilst doing something else like enjoying the scenery we are not photographers. So its to be new bridge camera which will take up even less room than the previous one did.
I am very taken with the Sony HX1 with its CMOS technology and ultra fast shooting.

Plusnet, Safari 5, G5 PowerPC iMac running OSX 10.5.8, Salisbury UK : Get behind early - it gives you more time to catch up.
It costs an arm and a leg, but looks to be a cracking camera. An SLR in all but name, and the mini four thirds chip should give really excellent results.
The swivelling LCD screen would be extremely useful in many situations, not least when taking horizontal (with the ground) low level shots of plants or minibeasts.
I don't wish to bang the Lumix drum again, but here goes. Not being a photographer either I was looking for something that would take good "snaps" & allow a little creativity should the need arise. I bought a Lumix LX3 at the behest of a friend who knows more about phography than me.
The only negative point I can highlight is that the zoom range is limited to 2.5. This made no difference to me as I dont use a lot of zoom. The big plus for me was the size I like to keep my camera on a neck strap down the front of my waterproof smock so it's handy if I see something I like.
As Stew implied I have just bought a new camera for Eleanor as the D300 was going to be a bit heavy for Her to use at the wedding yesterday as I would not be there.
The Panasonic Lumix GF1 is just an awesome bit of kit. 4/3rds system and has removable/replaceable lenses if you want a bit more.
I bought it with the stunning 20mm pancake lens as this is 40mm in 4/3rds and it reckoned to be their best lens yet. Perfect for the wedding shots Eleanor would be taking.
It can record in RAW or JPEG or a combination of the two. It also has an instant HD recorder facility.
If you fancy a play, as you know we are not that far away.
