Hi,

Hoping to get a motorhome in coming month and plan to fulltime. Hobby of mine is photography and currently edit images on laptop. Whilst I like the portability of a laptop I'm aware that the screens are not the best for digital imaging and colour accuracy.

Had I not decided to fulltime I would have simply bought a 22 inch monitor, perhaps even one with a Freeview tuner and connected it to laptop for digital imaging. I'm assuming this might not work in MH unless I was on hookup. I see that for TV purposes most seem to use units that are designed to work on 12v and 240v but whilst these might be good for viewing TV I doubt they are suitable for critical digital imaging.

So any ideas? Should I get a quality monitor and just accept it can only be used when on hookup or is there a product I'm overlooking? I'm guessing an inverter is out of the question? Do the PC monitors require a stable current that inverters are not capable of?

Any assistance would be helpful. Having spent good money on digital SLR and a Huey pro calibration device seems a nonsense to use a crappy monitor.

Cheers

Gary

Hi Gary

I do quite a lot of retouching for commercial clients [at office] and need accurate colour reproduction. I use a Formac monitor 21" [was £800] and Eye-One Match software/hardware calibration.

Funnily enough I think it will run on 12v, as it has a transformer.
This is not the cheaper 19" unit that has a cheaper screen.

IF you are a mac user then I can also recommend the elgato EyeTV DTT USB stick for freeview transmissions. If you are on PC there are also similar bits of hardware.

I'd buy the best monitor for business you can, then get an add-on TV arrangement.

Sorry I can't help more about in-truck power, but I can't see running it off a decent inverter would be problem?

External monitors on Laptops can be problematical for Digital Imaging.

You would need to get one that has native Pixel Dimensions that your laptop can support. Otherwise sharpness becomes an issue.

Also of concern and therefore needs checking is the ability of your laptops graphic device/card to be able to support profiling your external display. The Eye-one Calibration device and software will support multiple monitors.

Calibration and Profiling is a must if you're serious enough about colours.

Thanks for the replies. It looks like I need to do some more research on this one. Ideally I would like a good quality monitor of a decent size that can be connected to the laptop for digital imaging.

From what I'm reading there seems to be some debate as to whether one of these would work well on 12v via an inverter but it certainly would be no problem on 240v whilst on hookup.

I need to research more about whether connecting an external monitor to a laptop has any quality considerations as one of the replies indicated. I've just had to buy a new laptop, a HP Pavilion dv6 which has a dedicated graphics card rather than built in to motherboard so I'm hopeful it would work. It can connect to an external monitor via the VGA output but it also has HDMI output and I'm guessing these are now common on PC monitors so this might be another connection option.

The Huey Pro is not the best calibration device on the market but it's good enough for my purposes and certainly better than calibrating via software. I'm led to believe it can calibrate multiple monitors so should be good to work both on the laptop LCD and external monitor.

Since funds are tight at the moment this can wait for a couple of months which will hopefully give me time to make sure what I'm trying to achieve can work if fulltiming in a motorhome.

Cheers

Gary

I understand certain Mac laptops have screens reputed (from reviews) to be virtually as good as their desktop screens, so it could be worth looking at one of those.
