One of my ambitions is to take an evening picture of a motorway, with along exposure, thus creating long streaks of light made by passing vehicles.

I was planning to upgrade to the above Canon but cannot see from the spec if there is a manual setting so I can extend the normal exposure time.

Hope this makes sense.

From spec on Canon UK

Quote:

SHUTTER
Type Electronically-controlled focal-plane shutter

Speed 30-1/4000 sec (1/2 or 1/3 stop increments), Bulb (Total shutter speed range available range varies by shooting mode)

30 seconds ought to be long enough for the sort of shot you want to take.

Or use the "bulb" setting and hold it open as long as you like.

I'm pretty sure it should have a "Manual" setting to allow you to choose both shutter speed and aperture - the 400D has.

I would also consider Nikon D60 which has everything you require

Don't forget the tripod or have a convenient low wall nearby.

As the op was planning an 'upgrade' a Nikon D60 would not be suitable if the op already has a selection of EOS lenses.

With regards to taking photo's over motorways at night, be VERY careful.
I once had the same idea and chose a bridge overlooking the M6 just south of the knutsford services. The idea being that I would get the red/white lights on the motorway along with those on the slip roads entering and leaving the services.

Having taken a few experiment shots, a vehicle approached over the bridge and at the last minute mounted the pavement and put his blue light on. This was back in the early 1980's when the police did'nt see amateur photographers as terrorists. They had come to check up on me after receiving a report from a diner in the resteraunt of a person on the bridge with a rifle. :hathat35: Shocked

yep, they have manual and you can go up to 30 secs timed and then on to Bulb - i.e hold it open as long as you like.

On a tangent - I've found for taking white water shots that about 1/15th second merges the white water in to a nice cascade effect.

Also as a thought I have used a tripod on a bridge and found that the bridge vibrated and this blurred the image when using a long exposure.
