Have tried to post a photo by treating it as an attachment but although the photo tries to load it doesn't 'attach'. I looked at the allowable size which is 512 KB. All my photos seem to hover around the 3MB mark. I have tried cropping to reduce the size but can't really get much below 1MB and keep the meaning of the photo. Is there anything else I can do? My photos are in JPG.
thanks in advance
lala

Iala,
I use a program I downloaded from Irfan View to resize my photos.

http://www.irfanview.com/

It is free to download and easy to use.

Once downloaded you click to open program.

Click open file

choose photo

then go to Image tab and click on resize.

I do 640 x

or 320 x

My photos are in Jpeg and start at over 3 mb. Easily resized with this program.

I am NOT a photo expert but it sounds as if you have your pics as a .bmp file which tend to be large.

The best thing is to save it as a jpeg file since it is then compressed and is much smaller (apparently).

I am sure someone will correct this if it is wrong but I think I would open it in e.g. Paint and then "save as" a jpeg file (the option to save in a different format is on the "save as" menu.

When I tried it going the other way a 423KB jpeg opened as a 5.49MB - so that may be the problem.

Hope that helps,

Dave

Edited in later;

Having reread you original post I see that you said they are both jpegs anyway so my suggestion is totally useless! Laughing Embarassed

Oh well back to the drawing board - must learn to read more carefully!

Sorry to raise your hopes but as I said I am sure other experts will give you MUCH more useful information and advice.

Dave

Hi
I'm not very computer literate but all I do is
Export the photo to my desktop and at this time I say, jpeg, small when the options come up.
When I attach the photo I go to Choose File and click on desktop so it's easy to find.
This doesn't change the size of the photos in my library
Hope this helps

Hello, if it is of any help, i always reduce the quality in my camera first to avoid having to reduce big files. I have an ebay shop and use the camera all the time. Always remember to revert it back to better quality to catch those more important pictures for keep sake. P.s i'am no camera expert!! good luck, mat

All the tips given to you are absolutely fine but there is a method which you can use without downloading anything (assuming you use Windows.)

Go to My Pictures and select your photo

Right click and look at the menu

Ignore the "Open" but scan down to where it says "Open with"

Click it and choose Microsoft Picture Manager

The picture will then open in this program

Click on "Picture" in menu at top and select "Resize"

Choose something like 800 by 600 and save it on your desktop with a name like MHF1

Repeat for other pictures

Once uploaded, delete the desktop ones.

Finally wait for posts commending your fine photography

Ian

Thanks everyone. I have read everything and with a bit of advice from all of you I have now posted a new topic (Will my pet keep the bandits at bay? ) which is really an excuse to see if I could now post a photo. It has worked,
many thanks,
lala

Hi

Croping will only remove parts of your picture, it does not necessarily reduce the size of the image. You need to use a 'photo lab', I use photoplus but there are many free ones about such as the microsoft one. Then go into image size and reduce your picture either by inches or pixels, this will keep the picture you want and allow you to reduce the size to get it to upload.

You can also put really big picture files on MHF if you have already got it on the internet somewhere. This one is hosted in an MHF album. This way it isn't an attachment.

Apologies in advance to anyone who has a small screen
