I have inherited a whole lot of family photos. Together with my own it comes to about seven or eight albums or more.

I am researching the family tree so am scanning some into the computer for that purpose. My problem is what is the best way to store the others?

They range from pre war black and whites to current digital.

While I have been emptying the albums to dispose of duplicates I have noticed that some albums are better quality than others. If the advice is to keep them in albums can anyone recommend a good quality one?

Hi Pat
A normal photo album will be fine but if you can find one with Achive quality acid free wallets so much the better but dont go travelling miles to get this.

With scanning the photos into your PC use the rule of 3 which is
A copy on your PC
A copy on a CD and
A copy on a memory stiick or removable hard drive.

That way you will cover most eventualities if the worst happens.

Hi patp,

Just asked a similar question on here as I have not only photos but letters written by Uncles during the war to my Gran.

See Here

The answer is to keep them in acid free storage. You know what happens with normal plastic wallets. After a period of time the print from printed sheets comes off onto the wallet. With the archival wallets this does not happen.
The best prices I have found so far are from here:

Archival Wallets

We already have a lot of the family tree going back to the 1400's but I will also be scanning so others can see the documents.

Best regards

Chris

Thank you all.

I see that W H Smith have some albums that are acid free. Might take a look at them.

For those relatives that died in the two wars you can find details on the Commonwealth War Graves site. It is also possible to download a picture of the cemetery where the soldier is buried.

I think that MHF ought to start a family history section Laughing
