Hello All.

We're of to the Netherlands in April and I've be looking at the best way to get round Antwerpen traveling from Calais.

It seems to me that the choices are (unless one wants to give the place a very wide berth) the Kennedy Tunnel, with its possible long ques, if you want a free passage or head north west and use one of the toll tunnels and accept a large whole in our wallet.

Then there's the Waasland tunnel which I've read may be another alternative but height limits of 1.75m was mentioned followed by "but motorhomes are ok", whatever that means.

Any comments / advice appreciated.

Regards

bill

Hi Bill.
Went to Amsterdam last October and just followed my Garmin all the way to the campsite.
I did set up no toll roads but it only kept us off the French toll roads as there didn't seem to be any tolls from Lile all the way to Amsterdam via the Kennedy Tunnel.

Ray.

Thanks chass and raynipper. I should have mentioned about the possible ques at the Kennedy tunnel, I've now edited the original post.

So you reckon I should be ok out of peak times with the Kennedy tunnel???

I've been round Paris ring road, is Antwerpen on par with that.

Antwerp ring road is a nightmare Evil or Very Mad

However we always use the Kennedy tunnel and try to go out of hours. We have by mistake used the toll tunnel but it didnt seem to save us any time and cost a fair bit.

Around Paris it's more fast moving you just have to be brave & committed, Twisted Evil Antwerp is a little different it just comes to a standstill.

Last year went to Assen, sat nav lost signal just prior to Kennedy tunnel.
Three blokes one motorhome and no map Sad
Signal restored after half an hour no further trouble. We did hit at about 5:30 on a wednesday but traffic kept flowing.
On return trip lost sat nav signal in the same area.
Just kept following the mh in front , it had a gb sticker
In future i shall avoid peak times though

You won't have to worry now Dave as the Tom Tom is gone and you can get a Garmin. Laughing

Hi Bill!

Don't worry! Most of the construction works along the Antwerpen Ring are meanwhile finished, so during off-peak hours there are no significant congestions to be expected.

But if you still want to avoid it:

I don't know where you have this from, but it is simply wrong. The Waasland Tunnel allows full-grown lorries and double-decker touring coaches. I have traversed it with my 3.1-metre-high MH some months ago, absolutely no problem.

The only issue with the Waasland tunnel is that it will deliver you right into the middle of the city, and I hope your sat-nav is up to the task of bringing you out there again ... Wink

Best Regards,
Gerhard

I went through there in on my way to Germany early December without any problems apart from signs of major roadworks which did not delay me. Chasper.
