We have just had our motorhome engine serviced for the first time. Now as it is a purpose built disabled vehicle from new it is vat free. What many people do not know is that the servicing of these vehicles is also Vat free. Whilst our Mercedes garage is lovely and very helpful between them and us we have not managed to get the exact details we need to effect it. Ending with me paying £49 Vat I don't need to.
The garage kept asking for our certificate, which of course doesn't exist, and the very helpful ( and I really mean that) goverment help line indicated to the garage that they only needed a copy of our V5 which would have it on, but of cousre it says nothing relating to disabled. Having spent the better part of a week on this I have now found a goverment website that gives you the two forms you can use. Here they are. Mercedes also seem to have a probelm that their computer won't let them take the VAT off. Now has anyone else just used these forms or come up with a better way of doing. There is absolutely no doubt we fit the criteria.

Good point Joyce, and a timely reminder for disabled members. Many garages don't know about the VAT exemption, and as you say, don't necessarily know how to do the invoicing.

Popo,
I have had no trouble using the above form and have never been asked for anything else even though the motorhome is not displaying a "Disabled" tax disc. I see you have a custom built Event Motorhome, if you have registered it as a vehicle for use by a disabled person them both your V5C and your tax disc will show this. Yours was evidently purchased VAT free but if it was not, then I believe you must pay VAT on maintenance charges.
I would like to know more about your motorhome and have sent you a PM

I am pleased to say that we have finally got the Vat free servicing sorted and all the right documents in place. In the end it wasn't the V5 that they needed but the original receipt showing that the van was Zero rated when bought. So today I got the £49 vat back that I was charged yesterday. Its all in place now so next service won't be a problem. Everyone was polite and helpful and we are now smiles all round.
Now I just got to clean her inside and out and get her ready for the next trip.
A good result then and it does save quite a bit over the life of the van. Even without repairs, major servicing costs can be quite high.
