The Ford Transit is the most reliable commercial panel van ,they are like tractors but they are built like Sherman tanks easy to fix start every time.

Throw in my own two-pennyworth. For me it has to be the Fiat.
Now if it were which vehicle has the most recalls.....it would be Mercedes, followed by Transit.

Our motorhomes have been Mercs since 1997. Never had nor needed any recalls.
(Touch wood here OK)

I have friends who have Transits without problems or recalls.

I have friends who have Fiats and have suffered a catalogue of various ongoing problems, but continue to say how well they drive - well forward anyway! "Corners like on rails" being one statement.

You can only speak as you find.

I used to run a small fleet of cars and vans. The most reliable fleet I had were without question the old Citroen C15D's, magic.

The best overall was a small fleet of Mercedes, 5 Vitos and 3 Sprinters. I had a lot of problems with the Vitos (Mainly down to poor dealer service and dodgy alternators). The Vitos were the previous Spanish FWD generation, I understand they have got worse in some ways and better in others. The Sprinters were great and one went 250,000 miles without a splutter.

I had two top end VW T5's, nightmares, replacement supplied by VW was worse than the first. Some mates of mine and my Brother bought them after test driving mine and love them. Some have bought 2 or 3 and one mate had two then went down the route of a MB Vito V6.

I had a Renault 5 Van once, driveshafts fell apart at 3,000 miles, that put me off at the time but would consider another over a Fiat now.

I have a customer who runs a fleet of 36 vans. Has his own mechanics/garage. 33 of the vans are Sprinters and the other 3 are Iveco. He says the drivers hammer the vans. The Sprinters are superb and mostly just need routine maintenance. The Ivecos are constantly giving trouble and in the garage. when the leases are up the Ivecos are going and never again.

I know a lot of People with Fiats, there are many in the MHF. My Brother had an ACE (that's the Swift brand not a adjective) Ducato. He had no end of problems and, ended with the dealer buying it back. I know a few Franchised couriers who lease Ducatos and sing their praises.

I know a lot of People who have or have had a Transit. All of them say they are rubbish, unreliable and never again.

So MHF Members with Transits?

TM

PS:

What about LDV?

What is the source of these figures Ray?

I suspect its figures from a fleet lease company. The vans in fleets are rarely owned by the drivers and are hammered. If so its a good reflection of which vans can take abuse.

In a curious sort of way I wonder if our base vehicles suffer from the comparative low use when compared to being worked hard every day?

WE have had many different vans, from the old Bedford CA and Commer up to the new Fiat.including Hillmans and AUSTINS.But the van I found reliable and enjoyable to drive was the VWLT35.1996 onwards.with it's 2.5 turbo 5 cylinder engine.RWD.it had the Swift Royal 635 conversion.
