I'm trying to use a DVB-T stick (that I bought in Greece) with my Samsung NC10 netbook running XP with all the latest video drivers. There was no digital terrestrial TV in the area of Greece I was in, so I couldn't check whether it worked. Now I'm in Croatia and picking up a good signal on both muxes available via my Status aerial. However, both picture and sound are suffering from frequent freezing - irregularly, but at least every couple of seconds. I have the power management turned to maximum performance. I tried turning the colour depth down to 16 bit from 32 bit, but it made no difference. It also makes no difference if I play the TV image in a box or full screen. I'm just trying to watch live TV, not time-shifting or recording. Am I to conclude that my netbook simply doesn't have the raw processing power to decode the signal? (Analogue TV worked fine in Greece.) Croatia uses MPEG2 by the way.
The software I'm using is ArcSoft TotalMedia3. Would other software do a better job perhaps?
Although some netbooks will take it, they were not designed for video processing and TV reception. An increase of memory may assist, but you may have to accept that it may not work.

How mmuch RAM do you have? I have done some video editing on an NC10 with 2GB of RAM
Just the stock 1GB. How much did the 2GB stick cost you? There's no extra slot, is there - the 1GB stick has to be replaced rather than augmented?
I'm afraid it may just be throwing good money after bad. Maybe I should get a proper, more powerful laptop (perhaps secondhand) rather than the other option, a Freeview TV.
Not a lover of USB tuners. They tend to have lower gain than a tuner in a TV, which means that in a weak signal area you are more likely to see the "No Signal" message or have breaking picture. Most USB tuners are not capable of placing the Freeview channels in Logical Channel Number order and this can be frustrating. If you use Widows Media Centre then channels are in LCN order, but Media Centre is such a faff and very slow to tune.
Also, I would expect most laptops to consume more power than an equivalent sized TV due to the extra processing capability.

I can only speak from personal experience but I have just run a BBC Iplayer at full screen with no delays. I also use COREL DRAW for artwork. The TV sticks can be troublesome - I've not had much joy on laptops. The upgrade I bought was £28 - yes it is a siingle stick, you take the old one out and replace it with a 2GB. They are now lower in price >>Memory<<
Hope that helps

Happy Holidays to everyone for 2012
The above is only a personal opinion
I'm happy to report that with no changes to the netbook or tuner stick at all, just a change of country from Croatia to Austria, DVB-T reception is now near perfect, both sound and picture. I'm at a loss to explain the improvement - I had an equally strong signal in Croatia. Perhaps they use slightly different encryption methods?
