A friend of mine needs some advice. He'd like something like an A class but can't find anything with a habitation door wide enough to get a wheelchair through. So, he either needs a recommendation for something with an existing large door to allow access or someone who can do a conversion to an existing van.
It'll probably be a German A class if that's any help.
In my experience, I'm afraid it is not good news. Its getting harder and harder to buy vehicles with adaptions. You can get a campervan but that is about it unless you go for a custom build. Your best bet is an 'American' if you don't mind the size.
If any manufacturers are reading this and I have got it wrong then shout loudly.
Have a look at the links on my web site >here< for some who may be able to help.

Try and obtain a copy of the MMM mobility suplement.
It details a number of small firms that will adapt as an 'aftermarket' job. AGM Riverside motorhomes in Lancashire have a track record of alterations. Panel vans are the easiest as generally they are also used for welfare minbus adaptions. Some big manaufacturers will do 'one off' adaptions.
Don't for get the VAT issue if you are eligible.
I would seriously consider an American R/V and the person to go to is Simon at www.mercuryarv.com. If you look on the Mercury web site you will see at the bottom of the for sale page a SAFARI 37' diesel with full disabled access and living. This R/V is now sold however the pictures of it are stiil there on the web site.
I have seen this unit myself and can confirm that it is fully disabled accessible with tracking fitted over the bed and through to the bathroom facilities. I was extremely impressed with what I saw.
IMO the UK and European motorhomes come nowhere near the US ones as being suitable for conversion. I had the experience of having a purpose built UK one by one of the companies mentioned in the list. On delivery I took it to a weighbridge only to find that with the two disabled scooters on board plus my husband and I the maximum payload was exceeded and that was without anything else in it except half a tank on fuel. The company that built it had failed to take into consideration the additional weight of the electric lift.
I also saw at one Mobility Roadshow a European M/C with two ramps in place leading to the door. The gradient of the ramps were too steep for a disabled person to be pushed up it and the door too narrow to allow entry by the wheelchair. This was being sold by a company whose name became with B as being wheelchair accessible, I ask you?!?!
My name is George Brown of M-Line rv based in Alloa Scotland.
We currently have for sale on behalf of a client a 2003 Fourwinds
Infinity American motorhome which was factory built for a wheelchair user. The vehicle is 35 ft in length, has a separate wide wheelchair access door with lift for wheelchair or scooter, the front passenger captains chair can bee disengaged via an electric locking system to
provide a comfortable wheelchair which can move anywhere inside the vehicle. Also fitted is a single remote controlled bed within separate bedroom to the rear of the vehicle which also contains a wheelchair friendly whb. Also fitted is a large roll in shower, lowered combination microwave oven, wheelchair accessible dining table and tiedowns. The vehicle is on a ford chassis with powerful V10 petrol engine. the vehicle has also been converted to run on LPG.
this very spacious RV has only covered a mere 5900 miles and is in great ready to go condition. It has all the usual American RV luxuries.

Ideas gratefully recieved. D.
We were parked next to a Dutch Hymer last summer that had a wide door an electric winch plus a fully converted interior shower etc.
I know it doesnt help much but it shows what is possible.
There has to be somebody who can do these mods in the UK.
I'll try some digging tomorrow via my disabled sister in law

Wups
I have approached Hymer UK before and they will not do one. The reason given was that Hymers are metal framed and don't lend themselves to having the door widened. The Dutch Hymer was probably not modified by Hymer?

They build motorhomes to order and specialise in big motorhomes.
We have an adapted 25 footer that takes the electric wheelchair and was designed and built to suit our very specialist needs. We have also seen a van the firm built with hoists and electric beds for a paraplegic user.
I would whole hearteldy recommend you them and my van has been brilliant.
