Good evening all. We're off to France in a few weeks and I'm wondering about TV reception. I have a Plustron 15" TV/DVD and an aeriel with a booster. On the back of the TV it says it is able to receive SECAM. Does this mean I will get a picture, even if it it French channels? As usual all help appreciated..........Hobey

How did yo9u get on with the TV in France.

Mine was blank this year although it has a b/g /I switch on the back.I think the Analogue signal was switched off around Marseille.

France has largely switched to digital and therefore any UK digital Tv will work. you will not, however be able to receive the interactive digital text transmissions and will certainly not be able to receive the French DVB-T HD transmissions.

You will need a digital set top box for any CRT TVs in France now as Gerry says they switched off all analogue transmissions this year.

Set top boxes can be bought for €19.99 in stores or €3 at boot sales. But I think your TV must have a scart socket.

Ray.

If the TV has a digital tuner, you will not need the set top box.

Hi Joe-fly, we travelled across UK to Calais and across Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany , Switzerland to Annecy and back up through France. I couldn't get a picture anywhere!! I could get sound on 2 channels while in Annecy. And this was while the world cup was on. Still I managed to get most of the matches at various hosteleries throughout Europe!........Hobey

I got a Bush DV680 box on eBay, a bit cheaper than new, in good order!
This 12v powered STB (set top box) will no doubt pull in some local tv in Marseille next time and will prevent me throwing away the little 12" CRT set.Ok so it will not be HD but who cares if you just want weather etc.
In Wexford, east coast of Ireland, the Bush DV680 has pulled in all the UK stations from maybe Presely as Freeview and included the HD channels, on existing wideband UHF aerial, used until switchoff of analogue which has now occurred in Wales. If you are bringing your motorhome to Ireland you may need a STB anyway as RTENL who will bring us digital at end October 2010, are broadcasting in MPeG4 H264.
Of course for approx two years or so the analogue will still work, and some NI transmitters will not be on full digital power until 2013.So it is slow and confusing like everywhere else!
There is a campaign to start shortly in Ireland to have tv sets here actually plug and play on digital without a STB.A green sticker "SAORVIEW" will indicate compliance.(saor in Gaelic = Free).Good motorhoming to all, hope the winter is kinder this time round!

the answer is yes in general terms, a normal 600mm dish sould work of for you around france and northern spain.... after that going south in to spain you might find you require larger dishes... its all a compromise.... in general terms hope that helps

Any modern TV with a digital tuner should receive the local stations in most Northern European countries.
Except for Norway my Avtex works in all the northern countries down to Austria and Switzerland.......sorry we don't do France Shocked Very Happy
