My DVD camera (canon) creates VOB files which I can view on the PC, but I want to view them on my Proper DVD player (better for the family to gather around) but it won't have it.

So far I have converted them into Mpeg which makes them viewable (just) on the PC.

MY DVD player is a Cyberhome ch-DVD 402, and works great with my normal DVDs, but not from the camera, why do they use formats not supported elsewhere.

Also when converting do I need to change all the files or just the VOB ones.

Hi kev

Those VOB files are, in fact, the files that you need to create a DVD disc. You should not need to modify or convert them.

A DVD disc contains two folders one called Audio_TS and another called Video_TS.

The Audio_TS folder is always empty ( I think they planned a future usage that never happened)

The Video_TS folder contains the VOB files.

In order for a DVD player to recognise and play these there may be some other files in there too...these are .ifo files and .BUP files.

What you need to do is put a normal single layer film DVD into your computer and " explore" the disc...you will see the architecture of the disc and this will enable you to understand the structure of it.

Creation of a DVD disc is called "authoring" ...just google "authoring a dvd" for all the info you will need ...and more Wink

Mike

edit... you may find that by creating a DVD disk with the two folders as above and copying the VOB files from the camera directly into the Video_TS folder it will then play OK on your DVD player ...give it a go ... nothing to lose Wink (the folder names in the root of the DVD disc must be exactly as I have typed.)

Reason for change by spykal: changed must to may in the bit about the files ;-)

Are you remembering to finalise the DVD in the camcorder before trying to play it in your DVD player?
The other answer is to download the files to your PC and use the software that was supplied with the camcorder to edit and author a new DVD.

Thanks Mike & Gerry.

I'm not sure I understand

I have finalised the disc in the camera, when initialising the disc, I have two options Video or VR, I tried the other option last night and just taped some junk on the
TV finalised it and it played in the DVD player onto the TV, so I'll do that in future, but in the meantime I have 3 discs to sort out.

Another thing which I don't understand is there are more than one of each file, and when I play them on the PC they just run one after the other with no chapter or spaces, and I can't rewind except to the beginning.

I'm not into editing or anything fancy yet as I'm just learning how to make decent watchable films of where we've been so when we get pangs for Scotland we can at least look back and think we was there.

I looked at a couple of pukka DVDs last night to see what format my DVD player would play and it's the same as one my own films IFO, BUP VOB, so I would have thought it would just play straight out of the camera in my DVD player but it willn't.

Kev.
