Hi Folks

Needs some assistance with my van which i have to fight with to get fired up once initial start up occurs

Runs absolutely sweet no smoke and just passed an emmisions MOT

The cable on the rear of the unit connected to the air intake seems to be slack and there is not much movement in the actuating arm ( although these are controlled by screw stops )

Any help please as I leave for Itally in 5 weeks and need to know I have some reliability back

Cheers

Andy

Hi,

Usual D-I-Y fixable issue with starting issues on diesels is the glow plugs.
These are used to heat the cylinders prior to cranking over.
They are on while the orange light is on after turning on the ignition key.

Are you also having difficulties with getting it to actually fire up ?

Very often one plug will fail and in normal temperatures may not be noticed but when another fails things can start to get bad.

To test the glow plugs you will need to remove the wire from the top of each one. They are just visible in the picture you posted and are situated below the injectors.
There are 4 of them.

Once isolated from the wire you can test them by measuring the resistance from the centre pin to the engine block using a multimeter set to ohms or by making up a continuity device with a small battery and a bulb. If there is continuity or a low resistance in ohms then it is a fair bet that the glow plug is OK.

If you find a failure then it should be replaced. You can get them at Halfords or motor factors. If changing 1 then I would change all.

The cable you show is slightly slack and goes to the throttle pedal. It can be adjusted slightly with the nut and screw on the end of the cable but some slack must be left. I would not touch the end stop adjustments.

Thanks for the comments. All glow plugs have been replaced at the weekend ( the one on the right is a real pig to get to )

Any more ideas on the cable however as the throttle cable is actually on the front of the pump, the one on the rear goes to the housing over the offending right hand glow plug

Van starts Very well when cold just have to try it on the warming up run. Need to drive for 10 miles and then return home and then switch it off ( just in case of a re-start issue )

Cheers

Hi,

Just had a look at my Peugeot based MH and the fuel pump is similar but different.

There are 2 cables but mine are positioned one above the other. One is the throttle and the other one runs to the area of the air inlet and this cable has no slack in it.

Really don't know what it is for, I grew up with petrol and carbs, sorry.

I would have thought a bit of serious web surfing should throw up an answer, though must admit I haven't found anything yet.

It's the cold start device BUT it isn't a choke (a diesel doesn't have or need one) it actually alters the injector timing slightly (retards it I think) to aid cold combustion.

It should be tight when the engine is cold, but slacken off once the engine has warmed up.

Hi Andy

New to forums but just saw this while browsing.
The cable is waxstat operated and will slacken off as engines warms when setting cold not only should the cable be tight but the lever it is operating should be pulled towards rear of pump as this operates the pump cold start system which is basically a fuel enrichment system similar to an old choke on a car increasing fuel versus air in fuel/air mix.

Hope you already sorted this but if not hope this helps.

Andy
