Does anyone on here have any opinions on the above, used it for instance? Is it worth buying and is it very time consuming, or is it as simple as installing software, putting in the negatives and off you go
I have so many negatives, and photo's and years ago I bought an Epson scanner to do the job, I never did, it was too fiddly, and I was still working at that time, and scanner got sold as items became out of date....and I now have an all-in-one Canon which suits for us now in retirement
I would like to scan the negs in, and give the children them, plus photos, and thereby giving me a large cupboard and drawer free of them all. What they do with them, is up to them of course, but I will have digitised them anyway.
I would get another hard drive, and back all photos only onto that as well,
When I retired I decided that I wanted to put onto the computer my slides which were taken in the 60s and 70s over 1000 in total.
I purchased a scanner for such job. Yes it was very fidely and time consumming, only would scan four slides at a time. But, over a period and when I had an hour or two spare, I would sit and scan, and I have to say, I was very pleased with the result. Not sure if this is of help to you, and this task was undertaken about 18 months ago, so the scanner was not that old.
Cannot comment on Ion, but I have a Nikon Coolscan IV. Expensive when I bought it, but now available quite cheaply - see link below.
I can vouch for the quality and it should come with software. If not, that can be downloaded from the Nikon website. Works with PC and Mac.
It will accept sides in mounts, or negatives in strips of 6.
Unfortunately as I have lent my scanner to a friend, I cannot give you exact details - but I am sure if you log onto the Jessops web site you will find it, it was about £69. Jessops wanted about £500 to do the job for me - no brainer with that one!!!
I have just had a quick look on their web site, but cannot see the model I purchased. If I find out the model/make I will let you know.
I purchased the ion usb turntable and copied all our lps onto the computer before we moved, as we also got rid of the hi-fi system, and just thought that was worth doing, and cheap enough and I then sold the ion again.
Was hoping to get some first hand info from someone...
Better do a research for a review on google....

Jenny - can you tell us the make/model of the scanner you used?
I have a similar job to perform.
ANY scanner will do providing it has has backlighting facility to shine through the slides and negatives.
If you have not already got flatbed scanner, then you should seriously look at this review below. Remember not all negative are 35mm, some of the really old b/w negatives can be a different size
I'm part way through my scanning project which is time consuming it's also very rewarding. We have a PC connected to the TV in living room and use all the digital photo's, scanned photo's and slides as our screen saver. You wouldn't believe how relaxing it is to sit listening to music whilst bringing memories flooding back as the screensaver changes the images ever few seconds. I can't wait for my grandson to be old enough to sit on my knee and show him photo's of his Great Great Great Grandparents.
I have started what will be a long process to scan all of our slides, but from the 100 I have done so far it will be well worth it. I use an ION De-luxe, the one with the memory card. I usually do about a dozen at a time, play about with them on the computer and then print them. My three adult children and the grandchildren all love the photos, bring back great memories of our travels when I was in the RAF. I just do some when I fell like it.
Good Luck
Dave
