Credit where it's due. Peugeot seem to have sorted things out for us. I took our Boxer-based motorhome into our local Peugeot dealer before Christmas and was told that yes, it juddered but no, there was nothing that they could do because Peugeot were no longer authorising replacement of engine mounts, engine management upgrades or replacement of reverse gears. Not happy with this, I got onto Peugeot Customer Care who were extremely helpful. Apparently, the dealer had not bothered to check with Peugeot but had given a stock answer. Peugeot immediately authorised replacement of reverse gear and the van went in for the work.
A few days later, the dealer reported that they were unable to separate the gear from the shaft in the gearbox and that Peugeot had therefore ordered replacement of the entire gearbox to get us back on the road quickly. The bill (which we didn't have to pay, as the warranty covered it): £5500, including gearbox, new flywheel, new clutch etc. etc.
The result, four months on: the judder has gone. Admittedly, I still think that reverse gear is too high a ratio but the judder and fear of resulting clutch problems have gone.
Thank you Peugeot. I might, before this resolution, have thought twice about buying a Peugeot-based motorhome again but they do seem to sort you out, even if the dealer is not very on the ball.
Aside: on the first visit, the dealer had resealed the scuttle panel to stop water getting into the engine - one of the other things I'd booked it in for - but, after my conversation with Peugeot, the dealer then fitted the proper engine cover. It does seem that you need to know what needs doing, when talking to a dealer. Thanks to you people for providing very useful information.
That's nice for you Ceep, my Peugeot dealer won't take my vehicle in for even an oil change, under warranty. it's too big, and Helth & Safety won't allow it.
So I'm doing my own warranty, now where can get the bits for my gearbox?
Our dealer admitted that the van was too big for their ramps so that they'd have to have the gearbox dropped out and replaced at their commercial vehicle unit up the road. Is there no dealer near enough who can do this sort of work - they have an obligation to sort you out, after all? What do Peugeot Customer Care have to say about it?
In my experience its a waste of time trying to use a Peugeot/Fiat car dealer to do any warranty work on a motorhome. They are just not geared up to commercial vehicles and they are out of their depth.
Far better to find a commercial specialist, their approach is very different.
Car dealers seem almost affronted that you are asking them to work on a large vehicle, whereas a commercials garage its their bread and butter.
And, in my experience, they are far, far more efficient being used to getting vehicles back on the road as soon as possible.
