I think the BBC has got its dates slightly muddled.

My understanding is that the first proper camper conversion on the VW transporter was the "Camping Box" launched by Westfalia in 1952. My California Event 2002 is a special edition produced by Westfalia to commemorate their 50th anniversary. It has the 50th anniversary plaque on the dashboard.

In 1969 we bought our first Campervan a 1962 Martin Walter conversion, and had many great trips in it.

The interior was of Marine Ply, and it had a gas mantel light. We managed to sleep inside, 2 adults, and four children(no rising top) on overnight stops, but used a tent for the longer stays.

In 1970 we went on a tour of Spain for three weeks and never saw another Campervan. Changed days Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

Great times.

We have one of the Splitty's and I must say there great.
Owning it now for more then 10 years and been to many places including Holland.
We have a 2 year old now and he travels safely in the back and loves the camping feeling, can't wait for the weekend again.
Cheers. Cool
