I have sold my Nikon DSLR camera and am looking for a compact with an optical zoom. I have no specific budget in mind but the following are important to me.
6MPixels minimum preferably 10.
Very small shutter delay, ie the time from pressing the button to the picture actually being taken. This bugs me on the few I have tried so far.
Start up time must be seconds not 10's of seconds.
ideally 5x or better optical zoom.
Low noise.
Fairly rugged.
Preferably standard SD cards not proprietory formats.
I do not care about taking video or HDMI connectors etc.
If anyone can advise I will be eternally gratefull
it's got 12 times optical zoom, 12.1 megapxels, is not too small, and has a good "feel" to it. It will do loads of stuff manually as well as automatic, and I think you can get one for a round £200

As far as I know, the only motorhoming Oxford United supporter in Bognor.
If your looking for quality (build and results) then the Canon Powershot G11 has everything that you require. Best of all it has knobs on!, meaning that handling is quick and you are not forever delving about in menu's. It will cost you though for a compact.
I got a Canon Powershot G9 off ebay, very well built, and manual controls, I tend to leave the SLR at home but wanted good quality and not to lug a big bag around. G11 is the latest version, but you'll pay quite a bit for it!
Another vote for the Panasonic. We've got a LUMIX TZ5 which is a couple of years old now but constantly takes excellent pics - the colours are fantastic and it has a 12 x zoom.
We,ve got a panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ6. Has 12 x Optical zoom and 3 x the other type of zoom,a 25mm wide angle focus and has a SDHC card in it. (sorry not a techie but went onto a website where they review all sorts of cameras)
Is dead easy to use but I do find it a problem in bright sunlight looking through the picture thingy cos it doesnt have a small viewfinder. Apart from that it is good - sorry have forgotten how much it cost.
