Can any one advise me, if it is possible to have the record/play back functionality on south beam using Sky+

Yes it is. You can play/record any channel on a sky box. The beams only comes into play for the footprint, depicting what groups of channels you can receive. Each beam transmits a different group of channels, go outside the beam and you lose that group of channels. 2D is the most famous, being a small beam over UK/Northern France it carrys BBC/ITV and is the one you lose first!

I didn't make myself very clear. I did not know if the record/play back function would disapear as soon as I got out side the 2d foot print and got on to the limited programs of south beam.
Sorry for the confusion.
