I looking to build a box to cover my Honda Generator to sound proof it when staying on CL's. A company at the Dusseldorf show where selling such a box which seemed quite basic but reduced noise by about half.
I would think that lining thin ply with polystyrene tiles or sheeting would be adequate.
However, you must remember than a generator produces heat, exhaust gases, etc., and needs ventilation around it, and oxygen for combustion, so must not be boxed in completely.
You may be better to produce a three-sided screen with no top, to suppress noise, rather than boxing the gene in.

.......... I did - and IŽm now yet another EX Marquis customer!
He who dies with the most toys is nonetheless - DEAD!
Re the box I would also try to incorporate an extractor fan like a shower fan. This would have the effect off dragging fresh air in on one side through a small vent and removing the exhaust gases through the fan. I am sure it could be wired in such a way that the fan came on when the gene is started.
For the insulation I would think that 2" Kingspan would be sufficient. This has the benefit of having tin foil on both sides. You will get it from any builders merchant.
A simple ply box lined with cheaply available acoustic foam, with downward louvred building vents on the sides will reduce the noise by 1roughly 1/2. You can use marine ply or plastic faced ply. Alternatively you could always add a slight pent to add rain run off.

you use to be able to get an electronic noise canceling device. It works by listen to the sound then produces a sound that cancels it out. All in a splt second.
I saw it demonstrated works really well.

Hi,
Having recently purchased a supposed SILENT GENNIE, I am of the opinion that there is no such thing, they are motors, motors make noise
Now most of the noise does come from the exhaust end, not much you can do about that, if you fit a contrived silencer and there is a problem and damage results, where do you stand?
I have used a little bit of lateral thinking here and had a look at how they do it in the land of wild camping ,Barbies and Fosters, Australia.
You would be pleasently suprised at some of their answeres to noisy Gennies, have a look. http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/28914/Camping_Generator_Noise.aspx
G'day sport.

To reduce noise you need; mass for dampening and stopping noise transmission through the cover ie a heavy plywood box, and refraction/absorbsion for absorbing the noise in the box ie an old axminster carpet with brissles facing the noise source, paint the back of the carpet with car under seal (a good thick coat) and nail or staple it to the inside of the box. Add looverers as other have suggested for ventilation, donward facing at 45degrees and idealy sitting on another absorbive surface to control those escaping sounds. Worked VERY well for me and cost next to nowt!
The most effective noise damper I have seen was in a test bay at Perkins engines ,a 12 litre diesel was on test in the test room and you could hardly hear it on the outside of the room ,when looking in the room the walls and ceiling were covered in like foam pyramids ,and the sound apparently was partly absorbed /partly bounced from wall to wall/ ceiling.

I pick up a couple of cardboard boxes from a supermarket and put the generator in them. One box inside the other with a complete side open to allow air circulation.
The boxes are discarded after use and new ones picked up as and when. There is no need to get too technical.
