Have decided to buy Andrew a Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro lens as the canon one is outside my price range.

Was going to Jessops and at about £170 looks ok.

But a google search on "Tamron 70-300mm f4/5.6 DI LD Macro" revealled other companies selling what appears to be the same lens for £115.

This is a surprise for him so I do not want to ask him. Surely the two cannot be the same? Do not want to get ripped off.

I would just say that Jessops are rarely cheap and even more rarely the cheapest.

E.G. Warehouse Express (who I have used several times) have it for £131.99
http://www.warehouseexpress.com/buy-tamron-70-300mm-f4-5-6-di-ld-macro-lens-canon-fit/p1013817

But it's on back order at the moment.

Though of trying Sigma Lenses which have an excellent reputation?
I have 3 12-24mm, 28-85mm, & 50-500mm and am very happy with them.

Sigma do a 50-200mm with image stabiliser and Warehouse Express do that for £175.

Edit sorry just re-read and see you want >>>300mm.

Edit-2
Sigma 70-300mm is £174.

It would be very easy to slag off Sigma lenses after my 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 DG Macro jammed up and something inside broke resulting in not being able to zoom in or out. At £300+ I was a little mift having only had the lens for about 18 months.

But the truth is, I can't slag them off. Sigma do make exceedingly good lenses, and I would have bought another had they still been available. My wife has one, so I've permission to 'borrow' that untill I get sorted. I also have a 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro

But the pain of loosing that 28-300mm has left me traumatised to the extent that the only therapy is to buy the Sigma 50-500mm

Getting back to your query....

I can thoroughly recommend the 70-300mm F4-5.6 APO DG Macro
and looking warehouse express is it's in the right price range for you.

I've got the Sigma Bigma (50-500mm) very good quility lens for the price but it's quite heavy at, around, 4lbs with the camera.

Buy from the web not Jessop's.

That should have gone back under the Sale of Goods Act - "Not of Merchantable Quality" as a lens of that type should be reasonably expected to last more than 18months.

Remember a warranty is only in "addition" to your statutory rights it does not (and cannot) replace them.

Auto focus packed up on my Sigma 50-500mm and even though it was a ex-demo "open box special" and had been £200 off, it still went back to Warehouse Express to be fixed at their/Sigma's expense.

Having looked at the receipt I noticed it was actually only thirteen months old, so I sent the lens back on Thursday by first class post,, and recieved a letter this morning (Saturday) saying that as a good will gesture they will repair it free of charge. Fingers crossed I get it back before we venture up to Scotland at the end of August.

Not at all - no generosity from them at all, as set out above.

A warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on as it cannot take away your rights - retailers need to understand this - IT'S THE LAW.

If you saw Warehouse Express's balance sheet you'd never risk buying anything from them. They've gone for volume at very low margins and are losing over a million pounds a year at present.

Does anyone remember Digital Cameras Direct? They set the web on fire before going bust and leaving a lot of very dissatisfied clients!

There have been many others as well. The problem with selling branded goods on the web is that there is always someone who thinks that they can work on that little bit less, which will put them at the top of the price-comparison websites' lists. However, they eventually find that their very tight margin is simply too tight and all they need is a couple of bad months. Cash flow dries up and down they go!

I'd rather pay a little more and buy it from a reputable and well established dealer.

Thanks for the heads up, I was looking to buy another lens and some filters from them. Problem is it's difficult who to trust these days with companies going bankrupt. Even paying a little more is no gaurantee you won't loose your hard earned cash.

Such as? One of the most reputable and most established was A J Purdy (Canon, Nikon & Apple Mac Professional dealers) and they went bust a year or so ago.

The situation at Warehouse Express is no different from both Jessops & Cecil Jacobs a while ago, only difference is that their prices were/are a lot higher than Warehouse Express.

Just depends on how much money you want to lose doesn't it?

Pay with a credit card and let them worry.
