Looking at buying the motorhome from a dealer who is providing the AA 5* warranty for 12 months - deposit is down and waiting for my list of niggles to be sorted

Thinking then of booking a motorhome inspection from either the AA, RAC or DEKRA

Any better than the others? Any good / bad experiences with the inspections?

Cheers all

Darren

Is it true - do the RAC and AA not perform habitation checks with their inspections?

Anyone used M.A.C.I.C - seems comprehensive - has anyone used them

Who would you recomend - I want vehicle and van to be checked through.

Thanks in advance

An inspection should be carried out by the supplying dealer before sale. Why do you want another one?
Beware warranties and promises-our van came from a well known dealer in Sutton in Ashfield who was absolutely useless in every way.... Evil or Very Mad

The van is used rather than new but yes the dealer will undertake an inspection and is due to also do a vehicle and habitation service as well as fixing the long list of niggles.

I am somewhat sceptical of warranties and even more of motor industry dealers - lots of promisses - is that un fair???

This is also my first motorhome so although I have an eye for the mechanical / motor side of the motorhome I really wouldnt know where to start with the habitation.

Also the dealer is close on 100 miles from where I live so dont want to be going back and forth sorting out niggles - so was hoping that I could find a good quality and independent inspection.

Any thoughts oh wise ones?

I tend to agree about Dealers. I found one can not trust them, in particular these that give 12 month warranty. The clue is into eh warranty was is covered by an insurance company. It really depends how good the policy is. look out for the Does not cover items, rather then will cover. I found most of them do not cover the clutch, or cambelt or any habitation parts, or some very limited support. Also be aware that you have to fund any repairs out of your pocket and then make a claim. Often it takes a long time before you get your money back and not always all of it. Typical insurance companies

Best dealers are those that have a full service station including habitat station n. When they tell you they will do a habitat check, as them if it is the full SMMT recommended check and can you have a copy of the check.

If you are not certain engage the AA, as it also does not just a mechanical check but the engine number, documents match vehicle, if it was stolen, in an accident etc et. etc and will give you an independent assessment from the dealer, which itself is its weight in gold.

Also why not check if any of the mobile Motorhome service companies would be willing to give your prospective van a full check up and report. There is probably one in the area where the Motorcaravan is stationed.

I cannot recommend MACIC highly enough. They did a superb job when I bought my 544 - By the way the AA do not check anything except the base vehicle.

My pre-owned vans come with a 12 month warranty and cover both the mechanical and habitation parts of the van.

Yes many insurance based warranties can have get outs but if one follows the correct proceedure, i.e contact us and we will arrange auhourisation on your behalf if you are too far away to visit us.

If you visit us we will sort it out, full stop, subject to it not being abuse of the van.

Bear in mind we as a dealer have far more clout than a purchaser and this applies to all dealers, you should always contact your supplier first before getting any work done.

Our habitation services follow the full SMMT guidelines and we give five years FREE habitation services on all vans supplied by us.

Peter, that is so good to know that you can arrange authorisation for works to be done closer to home when something goes wrong.
We purchased ours from JC and have had to take it in twice in the last couple of weeks cause the problem wasn't solved. We live 130miles away and never thought to ask if works could be carried out nearer to us!! We will now however Smile
Have to say though, with JC you get what they say. Mechanical and habitation warranty for a year and 5 year hab check. With no quibble Smile

It does depend on what the problem is !

If it is habitation and you have to go to another dealer, you may find they are reluctant to get involved unfortunately.

It was habitation, the inside had a shower when we did! It is worth coming to yourselves though, even if it is a bit of a journey, the staff are lovely and as my hubby wasn't with me, I was able to browse and buy in the shop too! Very Happy
