I took 9 images when crossing the High Alps a couple of weeks ago and have merged them into a panorama...

Now, for some reason I seem to have taken them at ISO 1600 instead of ISO 100 which has made the finished article very grainy.

I use Lightroom and Photoshop and have reduced the noise as much as I know how using the sliders in Lightroom, but wondered whether there is anything else I can do to improve the grain?

A section with noise reduction off

Lightroom does a fair job but is there anything better?

Thanks in advance.

The road crosses the High Alps between Col de Lauteret and Valloire, if you put N45°03'08.30,E006°23'36.91 into GoogleEarth it should show the small layby where I parked to get the shots.

The road is not for the feint-hearted but well worth the effort, it nearly reduced Mrs neilmac to tears being the passenger seeing the enormous dropoffs and lack of guard rails, but even she would do it again (with a little persuasion Cool )

If you look on Google Earth there is even StreetView available so you can actually drive the route from the comfort and safety of your armchair Very Happy

I'm no expert, and I stand to be corrected, but I used to be in the graphics business. Obviously, the more recent the version of PS the better the filters, but as far as I am aware, there is no realistic way short of very high-end workstations/software to enhance the grain. I would REDUCE the file size and output it on a good quality Epson printer. I've had some surprising results on my old 1290, and on Epson commercial wide format machines.

Malcolm

BTW An amazing shot, could even be worth something from a photo library

Try Neat Image here... http://www.neatimage.com/ You can download a trial version which will work on images up to 1024px. The full version is about $60 and is worth it. It works by detecting the noise pattern from the cameras sensor and removing that pattern from the image, no loss of image detail. It is superb, and can be used as a plug-in to PhotoShop and Elements. I have alot of images on my Pbase site, link below, in my Maryport 2010 gallery taken at 1600 ISO with no noise after processing. Let me know if you need more info.
Cheers
Stewart
PS I have no association with the product other than being a happy customer!!
