Hi all,

Has anyone had any experience of hiring a motorhome in Florida?

We are going to Florida with the Family in Feb. ( disneyland for the grandchildren) they are going for one week.

The present Mrs jede & I will be going three weeks before to have a tour round. We were going to hire a car and use motels but now we feel we'd like to tour about in a MH.

Any info would be much appreciated.

John

You could try this place;

Camping World

Never actually hired from them, but we called and enquired about renting. They were very helpful and showed us around their hire vehicles.

Plus they are only about 5 miles from Disney.

We have been there twice in hired RV's, the first time was with;

http://www.rvrentalsoforlando.com/

they were good, excellent vehicle, well equipped and very helpful, no problems - we did Northern Florida mainly staying in State Parks - bookable from UK including specific pitch;

http://www.floridastateparks.org/staythenight/default.cfm

excellent sites, really recommended,

the second time we went to Miami and went with another company and was not good - to say the least! I have not got the details at present but can dig them out if needed (PM me), we did the Everglades (excellent) including an airboat ride, then the Keys (not worth it IMO), with a visit by seaplane to Fort Jefferson (well worth it - an excellent flight and trip). but the RV was poor, poor vehicle (we rejected the first two), poor equipment and very poor staff........

If we ever go back it will be to the North again (and the Kennedy Space Centre) - the RV is excellent in these areas and they are welcomed as are UK drivers! But a SatNav is well worth having from our experience! (TomTom worked brilliantly)

Hope that gives you some encouragement, feel free to contact if I can help.

Dave

Hi Jede, new to MHF but just noticed your post for a trip to Florida. We were there for 3 weeks in 2006 and hired an RV from these people in Orlando.

http://www.elmonterv.com/rv-rentals-Florida/ca-375.aspx

Good clean well maintained RV that gave no problems for the 4,000 odd miles that we did. As said by Penguin, the Keys are not really worth the bother but you get to see the Everglades while you are down that end which is a must see and the air boat ride a must do.

The state parks are generally pretty good and a lot cheaper than private sites for staying on. You can also stay overnight in Wall Mart car parks for free but of course you should let them know you are there.

I note that you are going to Disneyland, great for kids but you must visit Sea World, which, in my opinion, is another must see. Also get yourself up to Savannah in Georgia which is a really nice place.

Hope your trip goes really well for you.

Brian.

I looked at hiring but soon found that on the internet a lot of companies are only agents and thus you pay more than going direct to the big firms. For example $25 on a early bird pickup fee.

Also watch out for things that their booking facility makes possible and you think it's sorted but then they get back to you and change things.

My advice is to ensure you are dealing direct with the company hiring. Have a great holiday.

We went to Arizona for a 4 month trip in 2008 and used Cruise America. We found them to be very good. They are nationwide and have a depot in Florida. www.cruiseamerica.com. Best thing I found was to call them, I managed a much better deal that way compared to what was their standard fare online.

Enjoy.

Sal

PS That is, of course, if you can countenance driving around in an advertising bill board!

Looks great Sal, but as you say the thing that puts me off if all the 'I'm a tourist in a rented RV' signage.

A few years back most of the car hire companies is the US took the signage that identified you as a tourist off their cars for security reasons. Wish the RV companies would do the same.
