For some reason the fridge shelves in the Electrolux model in my 1998 Hymer 544 recently went rusty and made a terrible mess inside the unit.

GBH of the lughole from SWMBO.

They appeared to have originally been chromed or galvanised, (shelves not lugholes).

First port of call was replacements - lot of internet searching and phone calls, to find that they are not made any more and even if any were to be located, upwards of £30 each.

Tried loads of local chroming/galvanising firms - all wanted around £70 upwards for the job.

Finally, found a small local powder coating firm in Castleford near Leeds - no job too small.

£20 for the pair, sparkling white, good as, if not better than new.

Wife well pleased - me as well.

Thats a useful bit of info - thanks.

I dont have that problem at the moment, but there is a shelf thingy in the vans bathroom that is chromed and starting to look untidy. It could be replaced cheaply but if the same happens in another 2 1/2 years that would be another replacement. I think powder coating would last longer.
Cheers again

Our fridge shelves are plastic coated metal and they are breaking up, I put small plastic baskets in and put my food in those

I haven't seen any to replace them and no doubt if I did they would be expensive

Anne,
When they powder coat the shelves they first remove any coating, plastic, chromium, galvanised or whatever, down to the bare metal.

The powder coating is then applied - it is extremely hard, tough and durable.

Roger
