Hi All,

Can anyone shed any light on why my turbo suddenly sounds like a cicada between 60 and 70MPH when I have my foot down? I wonder if there is a leak somewhere or a blow-off valve is opening or something. Performance seems OK.

The engine is a mechanically tuned 2.8TDi, less the back exhaust box which cracked off and was so rusty I discarded it whilst in Europe. I will replace the exhaust, I mention it only as it may have some bearing perhaps.

Thanks in advance

Simon

Sounds like a manifold leak, if it was turbo related it would make the noise most of the time

Are you sure it's not a drive belt. They can squeal if they are not tight enough.

has the noise started since the exhaust fell off?
60-70 could be the new tuning/noise point of the shortend exhaust, i would fix that first.

I had something like this once and discovered that the air filter housing (which I had removed for reasons I can't remember) had not been seated properly.

Worth a look.

Manifold gasket

UPDATE.

Thanks to all who gave their suggestions, but the right answer came from Sideways...yes it was the Exhaust manifold gasket.

Fiat 2.8Tdi Exhaust Manifold Gaskets are just four little diecut foil things with a pressed ridge running around the port, so any leak, once started is destined just to get worse it seems. The bolts were tight but one port was leaking badly in the finish and another was starting to go. The squeak continued unchanged for a few thousand miles ( a year for me Sad ) then the bit of the gasket that was intermittantly being a musical reed snapped off and blew out of the gap and a continous tell-tale 'puttering' sound under load started.

The upshot was a £422 bill to remove the turbo, take off the manifold drill out and re-tap for one the studs in the manifold that the stabiliser bracket bolts to and re-assembly and test. The garage said one of the seating surfaces on the head was a bit eroded by the leak but they scraped it back flat as best they could. The new gasket is a sandwich type in three layers with soft faces so is likely to be more tolerant of expansion/contraction, relative movement and irregularities in the mating faces.

Thanks again for your help.

Simon

Well, sadly the solution didn't work for long...it turns out the manifold face was a bit warped and the new type 'padded' gasket blew again. The garage have since had it all apart again, the manifold face has been machined and they have, on consideration (and experience I suppose), reverted to the original foil type gasket. I have since done maybe 150 miles and it is utterly fixed...so far, Unfortunately though, I think the extra exhaust pressure is giving more turbo-boost which is great for performancem but is making the clutch slip sometimes when I put my foor down too hard... Hey ho...it's only money. Thuddy Bling!
