BT have just announced a new app which will automatically connect you to their free BT hotspots and partner FON spots in UK and Europe. The publicity says it is for iPhone and Android but I'm hoping it will also do for iPod touch.
We have tried many times to use the BTFon spots in Europe but never been successful, many of them do not have addresses just a pinpoint on the map. It also looks as it the BTFon site has been cleared of some old hotspots which might help.
Of course if nothing is available within range then there won't be a connection and a 'partner' spot is suggested, which of course will be payable probably at vast expense. But this must be worth a look.

Hi,

I've recently become a Btinternet customer, so I've just discovered and downloaded the (updated) app for my Ipod touch and it works a treat, just been driving around my local area today and had no probs getting a connection in several places. Smile

I've just been looking into FON. I have an iphone and ipad (wi fi not 3G).
I would like to be able to use the internet email etc whilst on site without paying the colossal price the CC charges.

My question, which l have not seen on any of their FAQs is, just how near to a FON signal do you have to be? As most CC sites are fairly remote and not usually near houses, can it be of any use to me? I'm afraid at the moment l am using my MH more like a caravan as it is still new to me, a solo camper and l am not too confident about driving into busy towns etc.

Hi Marrabone,
We're off out in our car, with a list of 5 fon hotspots in fairly rural france, I'm taking my android and dh is taking his notepad... we're going to see how far we can get away from them but in the van we've got a wifi booster too so am hoping it'll be better ...
will let u know later

Been a while since this topic was started but how did you get on with the FON wifi spots?
Doing some research and internet access in france seems to be best via existing wifi if you can find a signal.

Presume you have read the long range wifi antennas thread? I can't link to it as I'm using my iPhone and MHf mobile version at moment

wifi antenna and Vodafone data traveller seems to be the way to go. Our laptop is currently connected to a open wifi on the the other side of the Mosel half a mile away and will pickup signals well over a mile using the repeatit wifi antenna from faculty x but I have found for £10 a month the 25mb allowance on Vodafone data traveller has allowed me to keep In touch with emails and a bit of slow iPhone browsing all day long.

Wifi on the iPhone IMO is hopeless. It would only be any good if you were having lunch with the person who has signed up for fon in their house

Yes - more than once Shocked

The problem with those as far as I can see is you need a laptop/netbook to connect and 1 aerial = 1 connection?

What I would want is a long range wifi aerial that could connect to a device that could create a wifi hotspot within the van that a number of devices can use. Not sure if a zoom travel router - wifi extender would do what I want.
