For those of you who are Blue Badge holders and who are looking for a top of the range breakdown cover that covers any vehicle you are either a driver or a passenger in (including your motorhome) then the RAC offer a heavily discounted, all singing, all dancing cover which is unique to Blue Badge holders ONLY. You can upgrade to a joint membership if you wish and it matters not if your partner isn't in the Blue Badge scheme too and if your motorhome exceeds 3.5 ton, then, providing you are a member of the camping and caravan club, you are covered when driving or a passenger in your motorhome too! However, If your motorhome is 3.5 ton or less then you are automatically covered regardless of whether you are a member of the caravan & camping club or not!
If you travel to Europe, you can also, for an extra premium, add European cover too and you can do this as either a single trip each time you travel to Europe or you can upgrade to an annual European cover, which means you are covered for a whole year!
It's an excellent cover and if the RAC are ever called out to you, they automatically will know that the person calling is of limited mobility and therefore this is taken into account when sending a truck or any kind of help out to you etc.
I was covered as a disabled driver under the RAC 'Priority' scheme. Only had to use it once and that was when I was on a demonstration in Canterbury when the motorhome at the time wouldn't start. We had been using the electrics on the 'van for loud speakers etc and had run the battery down.
There was an RAC man with his recruiting stand there right next to me but he couldn't do anything to assist as he "wasn't breakdown"! He did phone for assistance though and it was there in 10 minutes.
I am now covered for breakdown as well as other things, including world wide medical cover, by the bank (Barcalays) for the sum of £16 a month that I feel is very good value. Has to use it last year when the car broke down right outside Morrisons so had food and drink as well as toilet facilities available while I waited three quarters of an hour for the RAC to come. I was asked by the person at the end of the phone when I phoned for assistance if there were any medical problems ie medication required, which I thought was very considerate of them.
The RV is covered for breakdown, including European cover, with my Safeguard Insurance but you won't want to know how much that is-left hand drive, American, 6.8 litre engine and 4 named drivers!
The AA used to give breakdown cover for disability scooters which was around £20 per year. I had a friend who used it on more than one occasion but alas that is no longer available.
I can guess how much the RV is to cover and I know with 4 named drivers and European cover it won't come cheap!!! I was quoted a silly price with Red Pennant and it was nearly as much as our fully comprehensive MH insurance is!!!! Needless to say, we didn't opt for Red Pennant breakdown cover!
For the cover you get and the price you pay with the RAC Blue Badge holder scheme (£102 single membership and £134 joint membership) I think it represents excellent value for money, especially as it covers any vehicle PLUS any size MH too. The RAC's only stipulation, as I already mentioned in a previous post, is that if your MH exceeds 3.5 ton, then you need to be a member of the C&C Club as the RAC have a special scheme with them in respect of larger vehicles.
Hi we are covered by the RAC/Blue Badge/CC&C scheme and I would DEFINATELY recommend it.
We had the misfortune to have 2 tyre blow outs whilst travelling in Spain last year.
They sorted everything out for us, gave us a freephone number in spain and we even spoke to English speaking call takers. They even arranged for us to have 6 new tyres fitted on a SUNDAY morn and that in Spain is something!
