We have been toying with the idea of owning a motorhome for several years and need some advice. After recent further surgery and deterioration with my back condition I am no longer able to travel more than a small distance sitting in a car seat and use a mobility scooter full time. Although I have stubbornly refused to use a wheelchair so I crawl around on my hands and knees in the house. I am sure that my GP would be happy to support me if needed.
My automatic car has been adapted for me to use but I am unable to drive it due to my condition. My carer – my wife tends to drive the car for me with me lying on the back seat. I am registered disabled etc.
Can someone please advise us concerning suitable motorhomes. We plan to visit the NEC in Birmingham next month but need to be advised what to look for before we go. We need a 4 berth motorhome with a rear double bed and an overcab bed (for my son and friend) with a suitable garage so I can store my mobility scooter.
I am also wondering if there would be road tax exception as there is on my car, can I have two vehicles with this exception?
Our budget is fairly limited we would like to buy new (VAT free if poss). We did see some new motorhomes costing around £32,000 with VAT last year to give you some idea of budget although we would also look at used or ex demo motorhomes as long as they are not too old and well guaranteed.
I am sure you will get lots of advice from this site and its well worth reading old topics in this section as well.
No you cannot have road tax exemption on 2 cars. If you have a motorbility car like us, their rules now mean that the road tax exempted vehicle must be that one which means you have to pay road tax on the motorhome.
Lots of people will tell you all about vat exemption on new vehicles, but I will tell you it has to be a new vehicle and adapted in some way for a disabled person. Your informaton suggests this would not be a problem at all for you. Also if adapted at new then some things are vat free for you after buying such as mechanical services.
You bascially have the choice of a generic off the shelf vehicle and there are some now which are disabled friendly.
or
A purpose built one. There are a few makers of these now.
or
a secondhand one, there a few of these around but not many! Note you do not get vat off a secondhand vehicle.
Well I hope that gets you started, fire away more questions if need be, there is a wealth of knowledge on this forum with people in the same situation as you.
Have a look at >Nivana< they will probably have some second hand ones and they also build new. If you are going to the NEC have a word with Jeff Bull of >Coachbuilt GB< He did a brilliant conversion on an Autotrail and will do other models.
Lastly, If you draw a blank have a look at >mine<, I am selling it in the New Year. Its not the layout you want but it sleeps 4 has been well cared for and I have the full service records. The reason I am selling is age is catching up with us and I need more adaptations to make life easier. If it interests you email me using the contact on my web site home page.

Hi.
I know nothing about the "VAT" free, however, while talking to a m/homer about this and that,it came into the conversation about disability/VAT. from what i can remember, you have to have a handle fitted to the door,(Swing thingy) at the dealers, and keep the receipt, for it to qualify, and that would appear to be all.
This is hard to believe, but i can only repeat what i was told.Best of luck for the future.
Ted.
Hi Me again.
What he also said,"Do the deal on the price,BEFORE!!,you mention the disability bit". He reasoned that as you were getting a lump off,(VAT),the sales person may??,use some of your saving by adding it on to the deal,so sweetening the pot for himself. This is sharp practice, but he had bought more than one m/home,so he would know about this more than i,just a thought.
Ted.
You have to be in receipt of the higher rate mobility allowance to qualify for no VAT. We also had to provide a letter from our doctor to say that my husband was a wheelchair user. That is technically all you need but some dealers are cautious and want some adaptations to cover themselves. As we had hand controls fitted that fulfilled that requirement, but handrails or steps should also suffice.
