Hi, can anyone please offer some advice? I have an Iveco 5912 (Horsebox) on X registration with 240000 kms. I had the oil and filter changed about 2 months ago and since then it has been using more and more oil to the point now it is needing about 2.5l every 300 miles (I know there is a serious problem but would like to take it to the garage half way educated)

The sump and underneath the engine is quite ill wet but there are never any pools of oil on the ground after it has been left standing.
Performance is OK. Any thoughts would be much appreciated - oh, and what would be the best oil to use in an engine like this? Many thanks - rick.

Loose oil filter which would pump out loads when driving but not pool too much when parked up?

Any reason why you've not taken it back to the person who carried out the service, which is surely the first thing to do?

Dougie.

Hi there,

Check from the top of the engine down to the bottom, to see where the oil is leaking from, ie, where does the wetness start.
Also check your coolant reservoir, to make sure that it is only coolant in there, as any traces of oil could indicate a blown head gasket , which could account for excess oil consumption. Are there any signs of steam from the exhaust pipe when the engine is running?

Are there any signs of excess dark grey smoke from the exhaust pipe, again when the engine is running, and a few revs applied? That could indicate excess oil consumption due to it getting past the rings and burning off. You would smell it too.

It is very hard to advise when unable to view the vehicle.

Regards,

Jock.

Thanks very much for this i will check each of your suggestions.

Dougie, we had a fall out over him inspecting the vehicle and finding few minor faults before MoT, then it failed on quite a few obvious things which he would have found if he haad actually pre inspected it but i had already paid in the interim period... trusting people eah!"
