We have a second-hand Autotrail that came fitted with an Alden Orbiter satellite system and an ancient Humax Free-to-air receiver.

I replaced the Humax box with a lovely new Grundig Freesat HD box, and was disconcerted to find I could only receive about half the channels; I got 'Service is not currently available' errors on BBC2, CH4, CH5, Film 4 and lots of others. The Freesat receiver worked fine connected to the house satellite dish. Because the problem affected only some channels, it couldn't be anything simple like bad cables.

After three weeks of Googling and bothering Alden installers, I decided it must be the LNB, and replaced it with a £6 one bought from Ebay, but the problem persisted, and I was stumped; it must be the expensive SSC Controller box that is the brains of the Alden system.

During the Googling phase of the fix I'd worked out that it was the channels that need the higher LNB control voltage that were effected, and while I sat moping about what a replacement SSC was going to cost, a thought struck me. I undid the 0.5m satellite patch cable between the SSC and the Freesat box and measured resistances; the earth was fine, but the core measured 32 ohms! Not open circuit, not intermittent; it thinks its a 32 ohm resistor. Even bending and waggling the lead about didn't make any difference; it asserted its right to be a resistor. I guess this extra resistance between the Freesat box and LNB reduced the higher control voltage below the threshold for the LNB. Anyway - new £2 patch lead, and it's all sorted.

Top Tip: If you're having trouble with expensive electronics, first check the cables. If the cables are fine, go back and check them again PROPERLY this time because you missed something; It's always the cables.

Thanks heurrg
As always with electrical items its very often the connections rather than the equipment thats at fault. Especially with sat cables and F plugs as these are notoriously problematic.

Glad your sorted and welcome to the mad house
