I was in central London yesterday, and it was with delight that I found that the RBL Poppy sellers at the rail and tube stations were members of HM Armed Forces. It may be that this is not new, but it was nevertheless gratifying to see.
I bought a pin-on Poppy from a Guards sergeant, but as I was carrying two bags, I didn't have enough hands to pin it on. So on leaving the station I approached a young WRN and asked her if she would kindly pin it on for me. With a smile she told me that she was rubbish with pins, so she would never make an Officer - but solved the problem by pulling out a self adhesive Poppy and sticking it to my jacket.
And to complete the pleasure, neither of them called me " guv" or "mate" ; they thanked me and called me " Sir ".
When I got home, I re-read Kipling's poem about Tommy Atkins . Lest I forget what these people do for us.

Thursdayschild.

Your post has warmed me. My father who died when he was 62 was wounded by a shell during the evacuation from Dunkirk. He suffered from all sorts of problems on returning from the war. He never held a skilled position but never spent a day away from his work. His last job before he died was at Lady Haigs Poppy Factory at Warriston in Edinburgh. He died when I was seventeen & I've missed him every day single day since. He would have enjoyed reading your post as much as I did.

People willing to serve in the armed forces have my fullest respect.

Your post has brought some happy memories back for me.

Regards Dave.
