I get really nice close-ups of spiders when they hang in front of the lenses of our home CCTV cameras!

Stew, I am fairly sure that what you have photographed so beautifully is the House Spider;

Wikipedia page for this beast!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_house_spider

Latin name: Tegenaria duellica

Size: Body and head 10mm to 14mm. Legs 50 to 60mm

Distribution: Found throughout the UK

Months seen: All year round

Habitat: Houses and out buildings (sheds, garages etc.)

Food: Flies, mites and other small insects

Special features: There are about a dozen species which inhabitant houses and outbuildings - hence the common name house spiders - but they are not all the same as this one.

They tend to live in quiet areas and will form a web, about 15cm across, which consists of a thick sheet of web material, this is often found in a neglected corner of a house or shed. The web has a tubular retreat at the rear where the spider sits and waits for a suitable food source to become entangled in the web.

They become more noticeable in autumn, which is their mating season. The males are often seen scuttling across a room or falling into bath tubs as they move around in search of a female. The males have longer legs than the females, while the females have broader abdomens than the males.

There is a closely related spider the 'aggressive house spider' or hobo spider (Tegenaria agrestis),

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo_spider

which is known to bite WITHOUT provocation but is, fortunately, rarely found in houses - in spite of it's name!
