Hi. My new van will be fitted with an Avtex W163DR and I want to arrange some hard drive or other means of storage for programmes/films recorded by the tv itself and another source ie laptop. What are my options? Should I buy a portable hard drive with a usb connection - and if I do, will it be compatible with the tv. Would it need a separate power source or is it powered by the tv's usb socket? Would it be easier and simpler to buy a high capacity usb stick? I'm clearly in need of some direction!

The Avtex W163DR manual in PDF format can be downloaded from the Avtex.co.uk website support section. It shows examples of recording/playing from/to external devices.

The storage device which is best for you will depend on your requirements - how many hours of video material will you likely want to hold against ease of use and the all important cost.

There are large capacity USB memory sticks available now, 128GB and beyond, but they are probably more expensive than external USB disk drives of a similar (or likely larger) capacity. There are USB disks on the market can be powered via the USB port of the connected device.

It may be worthwhile talking to Avtex support for more specific/detailed advice, my Father has found them very helpful in the past - 08448 80 61 61

If you refer to the "Playing Movies from a hard drive on an Avtex W169DR" topic in the Motorhome Chit Chat section about a month ago you will see some comments about HDD's with the Avtex. It looks like you will need a power supply on the HDD.

The Card, USB stick or HDD has to be formatted to Fat/Fat32 to work

I have resolved my problem such that I can play files from a USB stick or HDD but I input the signal via the HDMI socket. Saves taking loads of DVD's with us.

I did get a comment from Avtex about the TV not working with an HDD above 300GB.

A 128GB stick would cost about £250, an SD card about £500 and a 250GB HDD about £40 - £50. Difficult choice??
