i went to start my transit based mh and guess what it was completely dead although its been on mains hook up, the panel shows that the battery is fully charged , the head lights and everything else works i had the same problem last winter, but it will not start, my wife suggested i try the other key it then started ok
is there a chip in the key?

My mate has a transit based motorhome and he has to give it a run for about a half mile every 3 weeks to recharge the ignition key or else he has the same problem.

This is what Ford say:
"Self-charging ignition key
Another unique feature of Transit – the waterproof key fob self-charges; just two minutes of drive time gives you enough charge for 32 button presses. So the key is always ready to work".
What year is your transit ?
Most fords from 1995 on have a chip in the key.
If yours has the (completely) blue top, then its the rechargeable type. Get yourself the older style remote chipped key as used on the mondeo ect.
We do alot of replacement/spare and lost vehicle keys and this blue type is hated by the parcel delivery drivers so we programme in the older style which doesn't rely on the remote being charged by the ignition switch.

These keys with the blue dot are not the type that rely on a charge from the ign switch .
Can you tell me what happens when you turn on ign using the duff key.
whats the pats light doing?
Ign off: pats light should flash every 2 seconds.
Ign on with working key: pats light should go solid (on).Vehicle should start.
Ign on with bad key:pats light flashes twice a second.Vehicle will not start.
Basically if the chip in the key isn't recognised by the ecu, the pats light will flash fast (twice a second). The ecu is doing its job.
Dealer charges about £120 for one of these keys, we charge £50 or £100 for a remote key.
Just a thought. Has the duff key got any other chipped keys on its keyring. sometimes the ign can read code from another key and get confused.
p.s. chip wont be affected by electrical items. there pretty tough.
