Title says it all !!

I have not been able to find an answer to this seemingly simple question so I thought I would ask here !!

Its just the "Mean old git" in me trying to work out what is the most economical speed to cruise at.

My thinking being that the most economic road speed will be when the engine is producing its maximum amount of torque??

(Veh is an '03 2.7 litre with a sprintshift box)

Thanks in advance as I just know someone will know the answer (no its not in the handbook and I cannot find it on t'internet)

I can't post a graph but I'm fairly sure my 316 peak torque is around 2500 (Give or take a few hundred rpm) I tend to cruise around 2700

Hi all at 2000 rpm my sprinter runs at just over 60mph, i run at about 60 to 65 mph, but sometimes i go a lot faster, and seeing that my mh's got the aerodynamics of an upright piano, it go's well, but it has been re-mapped. i thank you dennis

Most automotive diesels have peak torque at around 1800 rpm.

This does not mean that it is the most fuel efficient.

Using the example given by brillopad, it would seem that you have a slightly higher ratio than my 5 speed Ducato.

I have driven diesel cars and vans for years and have found that 2000 rpm is the best for economy. That is 56 mph for me.

A motorhome has the aerodynamics of a house brick and forward velocity is not a straight line graph when set against mpg. It is said that fuel consumption dramatically increases the faster you go due to wind resistance.

If you run at 1750 rpm and accelerate, you will find it takes a while to wind up and you will use a lot more fuel doing so.

I never use my speedometer in 5th gear, I use the rpm.

we bought a new m/h in 2004 the same vehicle as yours the 316 - 28 m.p.g at 56 m.p.h. h.g.v speed limit is 60 m.p.h on motorways but for economy all the h.g.v i drove had speed limiters fitted and that was 56 m.p.h

And a 616 needs about 3000RPM for 60 MPH, so its well "on song"
