In the supplement to the Times last Saturday it recommended a Fuji Finepix HS10 which is available from amongst others - Amazon. I have a compact, but this camera which has a video of it on Youtube seems to do a lot for the money and highly recommended by Jonathan Margolis's at www.howtospendit.com
Any comments would be welcome. Also recommmented on the same page is the Nokia N8.
Treated myself to one last June. Excellent camera with a terrific optical zoom. Brilliant photos, very flexible LCD screen. Most of the features of a DSLR in a slightly smaller and lighter package, without having to carry multiple lenses.

Hi, I saw this camera in our local photographers shop when I went to pick up my passport pics, I asked the professinal photographer about it and he was well impressed with it, he showed me some pics which had been taken with it and I was also impressed.
The shop was selling it at £359 but he said he was having trouble getting hold of them because they are so popular. Anyway I told hubby about them and we looked at reviews on line, which were all good, we also looked at Amazon prices (about £249 I think)and I believe that is where hubby actually bought ours from, I must say we are very impressed with the camera, hubby went on a training day at the photographers to learn how to use the camera and he has come home absolutely gobsmacked at what this camera can do, he was also told that this camera takes very good pics of the moon, not seen the moon recently to try it out.
All in all we are very pleased with our purchase and can't wait to take it out for some pics, I have mainly got ones of the snow!
I took delivery of mine 10 days ago but haven't used it yet as I've been away. It was recommended to me by my cousin who is a semi-pro bird photographer. I went into a nearby olde-worlde photogaphy shop run by a couple who would literally talk all day about cameras etc., and he said it was the best all-round thing since Noah opened the ark doors. Like the earlier post, he could only offer is at £350 but gave a 2-hour one-to-one instruction with it.
I decided I could live without that, and bought it (new) from a reputable eBay dealer for £245 including 10 goodies (SD card etc.).
It's coming with me to Morocco very shortly.
JLO - your guy isn't in Horncastle, is he? Your story matches mine exactly, including the moon bit.
If you are in the market for a Fuji Finepix HS10 and are able to hang on a few weeks, Fuji have released the HS20 to replace it and the HS10 has/will been discontinued.
The best way to watch out for the deals is go over and sign up on www.hotukdeals.com - once registered you can setup alerts so that you are e-mailed when new deals matching your preferences come up - so just add HS10 as a keyword.
Dougie, yes he is one and the same, might see you on a course there some saturday, hubby bought the camera but I am the one who uses it more.
lol - crazy. I felt a little guilty as clearly I used his helpfulness to - well - help me. His helpfulness wasn't worth an extra £100 even with the 2-hour one-to-one, which was a shame as I'd have liked to have given him the business.
yes we came to that conclusion, when we looked on line and found that we could get one for £100 less than in the shop, but my OH went on a mornings course for (I think) £25 to learn how to use it properly, they also do creative photography courses, "we" were thinking about one of those, although when we were up at Aysgarth Falls last September we were chatting to a photographer who said that he had been out with his camera all day and the best shot came about 1 minute after he had packed everything away, its always the way.
I have one and just discovered the release of a new model the HS20. There are a couple of sites that review the so called "Bridge Cameras"
Probably a close rival is the Panasonic detailed in this comaprison

EDIT p.s. if you scroll down the link above you see other cameras compared...
I upgraded my Fuji S9600 to the HS 10 because the zoom is 30x over the 10x I had. It has newer technology (backlit CMOS) and face recognition and other "fun" things. The HS 10 can do a panorama which it stiches together itself. I also kept with Fuji because I like the fact they use AA batteries and nowadays you can get really good rechargeable batteries.

Picture quality in all these superzoom/bridge cameras is never going to match a DSLR ("proper" Digital SLR camera) but 30x zoom is a 720 mm telephoto lens and the HS 10 has a 24mm wide angle capability as well. You therefore have a single lens rather than cart a bagfull around with you.
I was obviously a bit annoyed that a perhaps better camera was released just after buying the HS10. But as said elsewhere this may mean a good deal can be had on the HS 10. Snapshot comparison site has done a comparison for the HS20 and the HS10 (Not sure HS 20 available at the moment - March maybe)
Biggest difference between the 2 Fuji HS 10 (also called HS11) and the HS 20 cameras is that the camera can recognise more "scenes" automatically. e'g Night, landscape, face, macro etc. HS 20 also has more megapixels and a slightly different image capture system (Lively debate about pros & cons of this on the web!!)
Back to the HS 10! I've not had the camera all that long but it can do Highspeed video which at 480 fps gives a passable slow motion video. If you "Google Fuji HS10" on YouTube there are some good examples of what the HS 10 can do.... HD video at 1080 resolution and some stunning low light capability and then one day when the sun comes out again I'll let you know how it does in daylight!!
Thanks for your posts, I have been searching online and found a couple of sites doing it circu £245. One is Pixmania.com. Does the camera on its own come with all the leads etc.. Have saved doc with specification and also the Manual (pdf) which is 155 pages
Its really a question of how long the stocks will last, one had sold out and it would be 10 days before more available. Comet want over 350 for one
