Just been on to Sv Tech about upgrading gvw of our motorhome.

Its purely a paperwork issue on this model 3500kg to change to 3900kg and then new plate. £240 + vat

quite a healthy amount of extra allowance as already have 500kg

what implications would i face money wise changing to new weight, breakdown cover and insurance cover are main concerns

We looked into this but we could only go from 3400 - 3700kgs

We hit upon / was told about the following problems

Tolls
French villages
Breakdown
Tunnel

So in the end we looked at reducing our load!!

Hi Cookies,

Apart from the lighter wallet/purse caused by SVTech, there isn't much more expense, however, you can re register the vehicle through your local DVLA office, as a PHG (Private Heavy Goods), and only pay £165.00 per year road tax. This registration will mean adhereing to lower speed limits for vehicles over 3.5 tonnes.
This is assuming that you and whoever else will drive the MH will be covered for that weight/class on the driving licence. Many don't having passed their driving test after Jan 97.

Some breakdown cover policies do stipulate nothing heavier than 3.5 tonnes, but others can accommodate, including Brittannia through CSMA, and RAC through the C&CC scheme, and also ADAC for heavier MHs/RVs.

Good luck with the upgrade.

Cheers,

Jock.

No one checks your weight on toll roads in most countries except where a GO Box is required for over 3.5 tons, Austria and Czech Republic. The solution is to avoid toll roads in those countries, Alan.

Hi.
Under 3500kg you can get UK and European insurance WITH repatriation. Over 3500kg and it becomes very difficult to obtain repatriation. You can get over this if you insure your vehicle with annually, with one of the specialists.

I got my upgrade through my MH manufacturer for free - just sent me new lading plate, but I know some charge, but probably less than SV Tech.

In my case it was already registered and taxed at over 3,5t, but changing the V5C is not a big deal.

Saga Motorhome Assistance Plus will repatriate your vehicle regardless of weight, my cover cost £87 last year.

Google this to find a pdf you can download: Saga Motorhome Breakdown Assistance Your Policy Booklet

Look at Breakdown Assistance Plus, Alan.

Hi The Cookies.
I recently upgraded our Hymer to 4100kg and it was just a paper exercise via SV Tech.
If you check out my posts in the link provided you will see a few problems that I have had.
DVLA have lost my documents and it is now nearly 3 months since the upgrade.
I would not do the upgrade if you are expecting to go to Europe soon. Better wait until you return.
