Review Rating:: | Fantastic location on the loch side, you are either pitched on the loch-side or at the other side of the site access road which runs the length of the site. Cabins /holiday homes at the far-end and hobbit-style camping pods in the middle section, the motorhomes are pitched at the reception/access end of the site. Pitches are slightly sloping and levelling blocks may be needed.
Bar/restaurant was closed when we were on site. Toilets and showers have been renovated and new showers added- all spotlessly clean.
Water points and refuse points available, although we tried to use the motor-home point but the slope of the area meant that the waste tank wouldn't drain- worth bearing in mind if you need to empty it.
Walked the 7 miles down to Fort Augustus along the Great Glen Way-all off road, and suitable for cycling. Caught the bus back and the driver kindly dropped us outside the campsite.
A great site for relaxing (although there is some noise from the adjacent main road), fishing and kayaking/boating from the site; they sell fishing gear at reception.
The owner is the same guy mentioned previously, very friendly and an ex MH owner.
Probably no need to book except in the peak months |
Review Rating:: | Location, location, location!!!! We know this site quite well, as we stay here one or two nights each year, and have done so for the last ten years. We use it when travelling from friends in Helensburgh, to relations in Inverness. We use it because of where it is - it's location. I think it is the only site on Loch Ness side, and I am quite drawn to this water. The views are stunning.
The site owners are very friendly and welcoming. They have decided to build some cabins on site, and no longer welcome tents.
As for the pub and restaurant - both were open. We do not use shower blocks on any sites, prefering to use our own facilities, however they were very clean on our visit. Regards, campervanman. |
Review Rating:: | Well, we visited in July 2009 and I'm sad to say that this site seems to have detoriated further. The showers ( Only 1 male and one female in each of two blocks, giving 2 of each for 50 pitches ??) were sordid. The female one wouldn't even drain and the male one had a mouldy rubber mat in the bottom and mildew round the edges. There were cobwebs everywhere.
There were dead flies in and around the washbasins and we had power failures twice on the first night we were there because of the rain (what??)
The porche you refer to I think belongs to one of the family owners and there was also a large Mercedes which made the journey from the reception to the static caravan a number of times a day too.
This site smacks of owners who think they don't need to do anything to their site, nor invest anything because of the fantastic location. We would definitely NOT stay again and we have probably stayed in about 70 different campsites all over Europe in the last four months and this was absolutely the worst so far. |
Review Rating:: | We stopped here for 3 nights back in 2006 & had a brilliant time.
The pitch we were given was flat as a board & backed right onto the Loch.
The toilet & shower facilities were spotless
The bar was handy & even though the restaurant stopped serving fairly early (8pm I think) from a limited menu, the food was well cooked & very tasty.
The hosts were fantastic to us as this was part of our first real adventure & had driven through torrential rain from Skye (Yes it was Summer!!) to make sure we were on time to get checked in. Bob could not have been more helpful.
The Loch Ness visitor centre is just a short journey away & is well worth a visit
The MH service point is easy to use.
All in all we have some great memories of this site, OK it may not be everyone's cup of tea but then again if we all liked & wanted the same it would be a very boring world. |
Review Rating:: | Visited for 2 nights March 2009. The location is the attraction. Restaurant/.pub not open. All pitches hardstandings now. "Beach" area not kept very tidy- litter strewn around and no attempt to clean while we were there.
Apparently only opened for season 3rd March so may not now be "all year" site. Owners still in process of renovation including adding static bungalows. |
Review Rating:: | Agree just about all your comments Bill. We visited this site in September also and the bar and restaurant was closed. We were told it was always closed on a Sunday. It was a beautiful location and were glad we stayed but the tired look of the place let it down. We also found the traffic to the statics could be a bit fast for my liking and we didn't have children with us.
We would visit again as it is a lovely location but would hope the new caretakers would bring the place up to the standard you'd expect for the fees. |
Review Rating:: | During September 2008 I visited this campsite having seen it on MotorhomeFacts. Whilst booking in I asked for the 10% discount mentioned and got very blank looks from the two Caretakers who told me they'd never heard of MotorhomeFacts let alone the discount. As it happend I had a copy of the page relating to the site with me and gave it to them for reference and asked them to show it to the owners. The Caretakers got back to me shortly afterwards and said the owners knew nothing about any 10% discount either. ( I must state here that I am not implying anything by saying this I am just stating the situation as it was at the start of my visit. The same applies to the following short review which is just my opinion at the time of my visit)
The bar and restraunt were closed at the time of our visit when they should have been open. Whilst booking in we were told this, no reason was given why the bar was closed but the restraunt was closed because "the cook broke his arm last week". We were also told "it's towards the end of the season so we've closed them early". This sort of thing doesn't set a good example, not with me anyway.
As for the rest of the site, after three days there I came away with the impression that it's best feature are the views. As for everything else, the Caretakers keep the place clean that is for sure but their efforts are spoilt by other areas that lack attention. For example, plant pots with dead plants in them (why not put them away 'til next year), grass, trees and bushes that need trimming, a fire guard left disguarded on one of the pitches, soap dispensors empty for the three days etc, all this and more spoilt the site, giving it a 'tired' feeling.
In addition I feel that effective traffic calming is needed to slow the traffic going to and from the static 'vans down the end of the site. There was a Porche 4x4 going up and down far to fast for safety. Children would have been at real risk in busy periods.
In summary, a clean site in a great location badly in need of some detailed care and attention to live up to its location. Would I us it again? I doubt it, I would try the one in Fort Augustus first. |
Review Rating:: | We loved this site ! Toilets very clean and free to use . Nice little bar serving pub grub style food.Pitches are right on the edge of the loch. And when you wake up in the morning and look out of your window, it really just like it is on TV. The mist just hangs over the water and you can see the hills and mountains above.... Fantastic sight. take a short bus / bike ride into Fort Augustus, its a lovely little village with a few shops and a pub. Its the very start of Loch ness and for about £8 you can go out on the loch on very informative boat trip. The captain is great fun telling all kinds of stories, if i had been told them before I went on the trip, I would not have gone in the loch for a swim. ( Only went in up to my chest ). Believe me you will not be dissapointed with this site and location. Have fun. |
