The Black Horse is now under new management - since July 2012. The interior appeared to have been redecorated but retained the country pub feeling. We were made very welcome by the new owners, who are English but of Italian background, as is the chef. A good range of food is on offer, not just Italian, which we found excellent and reasonably priced for the type of establishment. The hosts even went to the trouble of explaining all the dishes, their ingredients and how they were prepared. A good range of wines was offered together with a selection of beers including a very drinkable (!) one from a local micro-brewery. Parking is currently on the large flat hard but unsurfaced car park and is suitable for even the largest unit. Recent heavy rain caused no problems. However, as mentioned above, the access roads are very narrow and we were advised the best approach was from J11 of the M20, NOT J10. From experience we agree. We were told work had been carried out to provide 5 hardstandings in a seperate paddock which were waiting for electric hookup to be installed, but did not have time to check this out. An electricity supply can be made available by prior arrangement if required. We did not have time to inspect the (chemical-free) waste disposal, water supply or showers we were told were available. We were charged 10 for an overnight stay, but the hosts offered a 10% discount on the restaurant bill. Judging by ealier reviews, the Black Horse has been very significantly improved and, being less than 15mins from the Channel Tunnel (via J11), we will use it again. (I would go back just for the roast potatoes!)

from the pub website-

Events at The Black Horse

' We now have a camp and caravan site so if you would like to stay the weekend you are more than welcome
We have loos showers dogs welcome free wifi access electric hook up ' So this review will tell the good and the bad......

The access along the lanes is narrow. I think we expected too much having seen the website- we didn't get a friendly greeting- not even a smile. The beer and my wine were good. Husband's plaice with shrimp and cheese sauce he thought was delicious but my spaghetti with prawns crayfish and chili was lacklustre. The service was very slow. It came to 39 for two of us. We didn't see the advertised campsite- just a van parked in long grass behind the pub. We parked on the large unpaved car park and when husband went out to get his glasses from the van, he was bitten by the host's dog. When he was informed about it, he just said 'that dog's schizophrenic ' and put it in the back somewhere. We were woken at 7am by workmen leaving the car park but that was okay as we needed to get off to the port. Though it was free to stay, we won't be using it again.

Meal in pub very good, good real ale selection. A shame the place was so run down, but everyone very friendly and relaxed.

We used this the night before a tunnel crossing. Followed satnav and the lanes got quite narrow in places - not sure if there could have been a better route? Checked the pub website before going and decided that the evening meals were a little expensive for our budget and we would pay the 10 and eat our own food. When we went into the pub to pay, however, the prices on the menu were much cheaper. We didn't check out the toilets etc as we were on the move at 6 in the morning. Geographically very convenient for the tunnel & port.
