Sestriere, built by Fiat founder Giovanni Agnelli in 1934, was Europe's first purpose-built ski resort. Located at 2035m at the foot of Mount Sises, the resort sadly has less style than the cars.
Having benefitted from the investment of hosting the successful 2006 Winter Olympic Games, and home to some of the best skiing in the Milky Way ski area, Sestriere is a magnet for ski lovers, and a sophisticated resort with the latest amenities. Nestled in the renowned Milky Way, the resort is ideally placed to access a wide range of truly excellent slopes. Sestriere's own skiing is also pretty extensive, with its pistes divided into three main areas and connected via one of the most advanced mountain lift systems in the Alps, where the extensive slopes and uncrowded runs offer perfect conditions to ski and board at your own pace.
Skiing Details:-
Sestriere's high, northwest-facing slopes make it more snow-secure than its neighbours and the terrain is more challenging than other Milky Way resorts. Lifts from town access three key areas: Sises, Motta and Fraiteve, which leads into Sauze d'Oulx. Most probably the best resort in the Milky Way, Sestriere was the first purpose-built village in the Alps. It hosted the 1997 World Championships and ran many of the races at the 2006 Turin Olympic Games. Because it's at high altitude, there is top-class snow, supported by widespread snowmaking. All levels of skier should find something to sink their teeth into. There is steep terrain and off-piste for advanced skiers, great scope for intermediates and good facilities for beginners. This is all supported by a continually improving lift system, which only gets overloaded at weekends and on major holidays. Boarders will not find any territory of their own. And the Milky Way isn't the best for convenient access to all its disjointed parts.
The resort itself is not overly attractive, as opposed to the stunning scenery around, but it does have everything you need off-snow: plenty for non-skiers to do, a good range of restaurants, mainly hotel-based accommodation and up-tempo nightlife at the weekends, which caters to the Italian brigades up from Turin and Milan.
