A timely warning

Hi

We were staying at Hollingworth Lake campsite (Rochdale) over the bank holiday weekend. The caravan owner next to us set off home on the Monday without a walk round first. He had two windows wide open on the caravan. The gatepost ripped them both off!

He will remember to do a check list next time
Expensive mistake 8O
There's no doubt that camp sites are the most dangerous places.

Last oversight we had was driving off with the leccy hook up still connected... no damage thank Dog!

And yes, I do always do a walk around before driving off - except on this one occasion!

Well we did a walk round and numpty didn't see the ladder was not locked in place we drove from bottom of Thorntonloch site in Dunbar to the office to hand in keys and someone had phoned the warden to let us know. How good was that?

The ladder would have actually been ok as its wedged between the bikes anyway but it would probably have rattled alot. Docs say numpty will be able to use his legs in a week or so ......

We divide the packing up and checking duties between us, each having their own list. But beware someone coming to say goodbye when one of you is halfway through their list.

I pulled off a site in the south of France, near Perpignan with our caravan a few years ago.
A couple of miles down the road and on a dual cariageway a car pulled alongside flagging us down and pointing towards the caravan wheel.
Right, I thought, I've read about folk like you trying to flag down the gullible English to rob 'em. I'm not stopping.

The car persisted and I got to see smoke through the rear view mirror. :?
I stopped.

The problem?
I had stopped our loading/getting ready procedure to say goodbye to a neighbour and had not released one side of the motor mover. Hence the smoke from the sandpaper like surface of the drive roller.

It cost a pair of drive rollers when we got home.
We were lucky.

I rely upon SWMBO when leaving site.

SWMBO goes on her rota..'Have turned off the gas'...'Have you put the electric lead away'...'Have you shut the roof lights' ...'Have you taken in the step'................................
My favourite is to leave the satellite dish up.

I've had more than a few strange looks as I've driven away, so much so that I know exactly what I've done as soon as I see someone look up at the roof.

And HWO (He Who Obeys) listens.

If you see me driving in the opposite direction, flashing my headlights and pointing upwards, it means your roof-light is open.

One blew off a caravan as we were heading to Wells-next-the-sea, and by the time I'd retrieved it, turned round and caught up with them, then flashed sufficiently to get them to stop, we were 10 miles further away from our destination. Whether he could get it back on or not, at least he had a chance to make the thing waterproof.

My worst mistake was to drive off site without lifting a leg on a trailer tent. The car seemed to be "underpowered" and eventually the 100m furrow I had ploughed caused me to stop. Result - embarrassment at the damage to the field, plus one very bent leg (metal variety).
It's a good idea to check your chosen site egress too. When I was a tugger I once pulled my pride and joy straight through a height restriction barrier.
